wont rev and very hot

I have an 86. It was running fine till yesterday. I noticed it running rough and jerky at slower speeds. Stopped, shut it off, started it and it would only rev to like 1800 RPM, was real loud at the air cleaner (almost like the exhaust was coming out the intake), and heated right up to 260 pretty quick. The fan closest to the engine didnt come on at all which it normally does. The other fan forward of that came on (i didnt even know that one was there). So I tried to get it home and it got so I couldnt touch the gas peddle or it would die. So I idled home in 1st gear stopping every block to let it cool down, It would go to 270!. It still starts OK and idles OK. I checked for codes and only got 12. Any ideas? I was thinking engine coolant temp sensor or the MAP sensor just from reading so far.

OK so I went out and tried it again since it fully cooled off. Starts right up, idles finesame as always, but soon as I try and rev its really loud bogged engine sound through the air cleaner and it wont rev above 1200 or so RPM.

Sounds like a plugged catalytic converter. You are hearing exhaust backpressure. If you have a vacuum gauge hooked to an intake port you can see if vacuum at idle is higher than at 2000 rpm. Probalby drops way off a t 2000 and holding. [8D]

Thanks, i'll check that. Before I saw your reply I took the 100 dallar gamble and bought an ECM. I used my old prom like it said in the book but its the same only maybe alittle worse. It dies pretty much soon as I even try and move the throttle.
