Question about brakes

Hello All, I'm new here.

I have a 2004 Z06 with 27000 miles. I just got the tires changed out and of course, I got the lecture about needing to replace the brake pads. I expected that. However, I was then told that the rotors were now too thin to machine and that there is a "lip" on the outside of the front rotors. I was told that the front pads and rotors needed to be replaced. Cost: $520.

Sounded like a line of BS to me. I know shops like to nail consumers on brake rotors. The rotors do have a "lip" on them, I checked them. But I don't know if this is normal or not.

I do know the pads are soft on a Z06. I can't see how they could wear out the rotors so fast. Again, sounds like bs.

My questions are:

1. Is the "lip" on the rotor normal?
2. Is it possible I've worn the rotors down with a Z06 with only 27000 miles?
3. When I do get new pads, can I get a recommendation for something that dusts less? A little less stopping power is ok, I don't drive my car that hard usually.

Thanks!:D

RE: Question about brakes

the lip is from normal wear. most factory rotors dont have meat on them to turn down. they trying to keep the weight down on the vetts. good new bendix brakes are the oem and parts are easy to find a autozone.this is a really easy project to do youself on the front brakes.as far the dreaded dust i found ceramic pads put off far less dust . ps you can turn them down they but they will warp when u stand on them hard .
