Shift ball removal

Hello. Can anyone tell me how to remove the shifter ball on a 2002 with a 6 speed? Is it threaded on or held on some other way? I'd like to install a Hurst C5 shifter ball, but can't get the old knob off. Thanks for your help, Al.

It's threaded, you just have to twist real hard. I actually had to use one of those strap wrenches (not sure what they are really called) to get mine off.

if it is a stock knob remove the plastic cap that illustrates the shift pattern and there is a metal piece inside the needs to be pulled out. I tried the strap wrench and torn the rubber inside the shift lever i dont recommend that. here is a link on how to do it.

I guess I should have mentioned that there was already an aftermarket shift knob on my car when I purchased it, and that was what I used to get that one off. I just assumed it was the same procedure for the stock knob.
