1968 Brake light problem

Hello all, I am writing to see if I can help out my dad and his break light issue. It would be really nice to be able to give him some information on how to fix it or narrow it down as sort of a Christmas gift. Well here goes:
When pressing the break pedal the break lights work intermittently. He has narrowed it down to the turn signal switch, if you wiggle the turn signal lever the break lights come on. He has asked around and looked on the Internet for a new switch with not much luck. He is trying to figure out if any other GM part is interchangeable and if there is any way to bypass a particular wire on the switch for testing. He thinks he has narrowed it down to a RED wire on the switch??? If anyone has run across this or if anyone knows a good website to find a wiring diagram it would be greatly appreciated.

Please bear with me I am relaying second hand info so I might have some of this a little mixed up.

Also, bonus question. How do I find out if he has an LT1 engine in the car?

ANYTHING will help and Thanks in advance for your help.....[sm=americanasmiley.gif]

HAPPY THANKSGIVING ALL!!!
