harmonic balancer

Hello all. So I have a bad squeal under my hood of my 01 C5 Corvette. I replaced all the belts and sound was still there. I happened to reach down to the harmonic balancer and found out that the bolt was completely loose. I went out and bought a new bolt and balancer. Now to the hard part. I removed everything to get to the balancer so I have room to work. Now does anyone know what type of remover tool I need to pull the balancer off. I am very nervous of stripping out the threads inside the crankshaft. Next what do you put onto the end of the new bolt if anything.

Welcome to the forum.

You need to get a harmonic balancer puller that actually pushes against the end of the crankshaft. Some auto stores will loan them to you. You could put a little bit of Loctite on the end of the bolt if you want to. Just be sure to torque the bolt correctly.

Thanks. Someone told me i should put a new seal behind the balancer? Apart from being 50 years old, the rubber is perished, protruding and i think the outer ring is slipping.

That's what I figured was wrong with it. Yes when you get your old one off then you can pull the timing chain cover and replace the crank seal. Highly recommended and it's relatively easy to do.
