RE: Shelby American

I'll start by saying that I absolutely love Carroll Shelby and the cars that he has produced over the years (forgiving him for the mid-80's with Chrysler). In fact, my wife gave me an early Xmas present last night, a Shelby autographed litho of his racing career and cars. :D

That said... The mustang is a consumer-grade car, fairly easy to modify. Unfortunately, Ford lost their GT and TA racing roots back in the late 70's, and are now making a car that you can modify into a muscle car. Chevrolet never really forgot their racing lineage, and the performance and handling of the C and Z series Vettes really show it. Consider that the Z series is based on a real LeMans series racing car, the modifications by the racing teams translate directly to the GM production lines.

The Mustang starts at a putrid 210 hp, with the GT coming in at 300. The Ford engineers designed the car to work with those power options. The Shelby engineers (with some help from Saleen) used the 5.4L engine from the Navigator/Expedition and boosted it up to 500hp and 480 ftp-lbs of torque. Nice engine. Oops, we need a different trans to handle the power, throw in a T-56. Oops, the suspension won't handle that much cornering power, re-design the front end. Oops, that throws off the front/rear weight distribution too, stiffen the front end some more to handle being nose-heavy. Throw on a body kit and some retro stripes, and you have a Shelby Mustang.

No matter how good the Shelby engineers are (and they are amazing), they are starting with a 210hp consumer grade $20k car, and trying to build a road beast. GM is starting with a 700-900hp racing car and "turning it down a couple notches" to make it comfortable for road driving. Which would you rather have? Personally, I'd rather have a bottom of the line car based on a real racing team's experience than a $20k Ford with $26k in options bolted in.

bill.

I admire the art work, Thats it.
I like some of the Fords of old, The bullet proof tranny and the 289 engine. I had a 68 fairlane when i was a kid, Cool lookin car, and ran over 300,000 miles before the engine needed rebuilt.

Any manufacturer has their good models and bad. A lot of people don't like Mopars. I had a little Duster 340 when I was a kid and that thing would run like a badger in a forestfire with his a$$ on fire. I have two bada$$ chevy's now and severalmuscle packinfords and trying to get an old dodge 413 wedge from a guy right now. I love anything that is quick/fast and well built. especialy if it is old. had a Studibaker Avanti too when I was 14, traded work for it, had a 400 in it and dug ditches in the driveway and left lots of rubber at he road out front.

yup...a 4 speed Avanti. worked all summer for this guy cleaning the 10 acers around his farm house and main barn.Iit was quite the car for a non(legal) driving 14 year old, hence the 7 moving violations when I was 14, That car and the '72Nova. Knew all the State Troopers in our local barreks.

In all honesty, the only Ford I like is the GT(looks killer to me) and the old 70 Mach1(Also loved the Boss 429, but then again, anyone who says they don't is lying to you, even if it's your mama).

I like the exterior of the GT but definately do not like the interior. I do like the new Mustang GT 500 or whatever - nice car but I have too many already.

And keep in mind that Aston Martin is a division of Ford. I love the V12s, particularly the Vantage.

I like the Mustang GT500 too, but I wasn't that impressed with the performance when it went head to head with a C6. 100 more HP and Torque and the C6 still bet it in most of the test.

Lee Willis 12-28-2006 02:49 PM

RE: Shelby American

I think I view theMustang GT 500 as a very different car thanmost people do. To me, it isso big and roomy, and so heavy, that there is no way it should be considered a sports car or something to compete in 1/4 races. But it does seem to be a superb GT - grand touring car -- ideal for long road trips where 500 HP, a good chassis, great brakes, and a nice, roomy interior, are just what one needs. I also think it is quite a bargain (at least at sticker price). But alas, there is no room in my garage for one.

RE: Shelby American

BLAHBLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH what is the big rivalry between ford and Chevy? If a car looks good than it looks good. comparing the performance aspects of theMustang to the vette is just like Lee said. The mustang is a GT "Grand Touring". 4 seats higher profile bulky and heavy. compare apples to apples. When ford did get involved with world class racing they whipped everybody's ass. The original Ford GT40 smoked them all no denying that. They were just stupid and pulled the plug. Victims of bad decisions. Just think where they would be if they stayed in it. The new ford GT is just a shadow of the original. Corvettes originally were quit sloppy and slow and poorly built as far as fit and finish as well. Actually, the manner in which they are built today you would think the fit and finishand tolerances should be much better. They have "evolved" in to the beauty's they are today. Now they have form and function, but they are still not world class yet, although they are on their way. Maybe they should steal Saleen away from Ford. His indigenous machines are smokin' and are more along the lines of the Vette than the mustang has or will ever be.I love Vette's,I own two, andI'mlooking at yet another, but I don't think all other cars are sh!t! Give respect where respect is due. And don't hate just to hate. No wonder there are so many wars going on in this world. I thought we were open minded here. After all the Mustang is not the onetrying to live up to the Vette, just some of the Mustangdrivers.

Honestly, I have to disagree, Corvette is world-class. You don't see Mustang taking 1-2-3 in GTS class at the 24 hours of LeMans. You don't see Mustang ruining Aston Martin's "glorious return to motorsports". You DO see Corvette doing that. You DO see a $70K car KILLING, I mean just MOLESTING $300K cars. Don't get me wrong though, I don't hate ALL Mustangs, I've already stated the ones I do like, but I am biased towardsa Chevy (Cobalt and HHR excluded). Anyway, guess I just watch Speed Channel too much. Ooooooo, Pinks is back on, gotta go, later!!

RE: Shelby American

If you read my post you'll see that the jest of it was that I don't think you can compare Mustangs to vettes. I never said mustangs were "world class" it's a completely different type of car. in my opinion vettes might race the working versions of world class cars but that doesn't make them equal. have you ever driven a Ferrari. or anoriginal Jag. or Lambo. or a Porsche, I have and there is no comparison. quality, fit, finish, grade of materials etc. far surpass any vette. my post was not taking up for any particular car manufacturer. just saying if you are going to compare cars try to pick from the same class. comparing the mustang to the vette is like comparing a Professional sports team to a High school sports team, or a man to a boy. Certainly a Given Vette may out perform a Given Mustang on any given day but it is by no means the greatest car in the world and falls far short of that goal. I'm not trying to start an argument. I just don't understand why people must always compare Gas and Water and can't appreciate things for what they are. Your Camaro would be a closer comparison to the mustang as it was the original GM answer to it. pony for pony. Cheers.

Yeah, sorry, I just got the wrong message. I wasn't saying it was the best car in the world, even though it is in my top 3. I was just saying it was a world class car, just in it's "Chevrolet" way.

honestly dudes, the Corvette is in its OWN class....NO, it MADE the class and everyone else is still tryin to catch up !!!

including Aston Martin, Jaguar, Porsche& Ferrari !!!

The real enemy here is not FORD, but Toyo and Honda & Nissan, thsy THINK they have wat it takes to compete, in the market, obviously not on the track !!!

As for FORD this is my version of a new Mach 1 for them ;

I agree with Mr. Lee Willis, No sense arguing with people that choose certain words to react to. Inconceivable uneducated statements are a sign of intellectual deficiencies and closed mindedness. The inability to take in all the facts, comprehend what was just readand make an intelligent statement escapes far too many people to take them serious and have a rational conversation. Facts are all that matterwhen the light go out.To each his own. Cheers
