RE: TOP SPEED
My calculationscompute that a Camarowith 3.42 isdoing 170-177 depending on tire pressures, etc., in 5th at 6200.It might be off by a mile or two but not that much.
But in this case I don't have to do the calcuations: I have a Z28 M6,too (see signature) andmine does a verified (checked by track radar gun) 168 mph at an indicated 6000 on a calibrated (shiop checked and adjusted) tach. 6200/6000 x 168 = 172.
You say you car as 600 RWHP which I calculate might be enough to push it to 196, regardless,it would have to rev to around 6800 with a 3.42 and standard 5th gear and regular size rear tires to reach 196.
By the way, the rear end of an F-body gets real light and drifty over about 175, and without a lot of aero work including some underbody flow smoothing, they get just about unstable about 185-190, so be carefuly trying it.

What car were you driving if not a vette?
When I calculate 5th at 6500 in a C5 with standard size tires and a 3.73, I get right at 170mph (a stock engine -- 300 RWHP -- would pull this if modified/reprogrammed to rev to 6500 instead of 6250).
An M6 F-body (Camaro, Firebird) with standard size tires and 3.73 would doroughly the same mph at 6500 (this speed would require modifications to about 350 RWHP).
A vette with a 3.73 would top out in 6th, if it could pull 6500 RPM, at about 220, at which speed it would need right around 600 RWHP. 196 mph with a 3.73 and standard size tires would be 5800 rpm in 6th with around 430-440 RWHP.

BTW, my car has a large rear spoiler that pushes my rear down at 120+MPH. It has felt just as stable at whatever speed I was traveling when topped out, as it is at 100 MPH. There was another guy with my same spoiler in his supercharged M6 who did 212 in 5th gear in his 93 Z28 who was in GMHTP magazine a few years back.

Here's the one spec'd to F-body specific. http://www.f-body.org/gears/ According to it, I was doing 187.

"I fail to see the validity in your calculations"
Really? Wow. They work out perfectly to me. I gave estimates of 170 earlier and 177 depending on tire size, and a difference in RPM (6500 vs. 6200 or 5%), and 3.42 to 3.73 is only 8.4% difference in ratio: it works out perfectly to me.
But whatever you say. You have the fastest car in the world . . .
I get really tired of this BS everyday . . .

Checked my math again.
Checked the gear calculator, too. . . . I entered all the data for my 'vette: diameter of the rear tires, rear end ratio, gear ratios, etc., and got exactly the speeds in gears at 6500 that I use as the shift points (the engine will rev to 7K but I never go there).
It seems to be right on . . .
Then I put in the results of my Camaro ('98 Z28, M6, 3.42 rear axle)and again got data I know is true because I verified it at the track.
It gave me a top speed of justunder 170 mphin 5th gear (at 6500), exactly as I had calculated and have experienced. I tried various tires since tire size varies -- the stock Z28 245/50-16, the optional Ss size, the 315 drag radials on 18 inch Z06 wheels we now run -- none mattered enough to change the speed more than 2 mph.
Finally, I used it to confirm whatI already know: it told me a Camaro with a 3.42 would have to rev to 7500 in 5th to hit 196 mph.
So I'm right, and with the right input data the gear calculator is right: don't know where that other data came from but I'm not going to argue about it any more.

RE: TOP SPEED
Check out http://www.f-body.org/gears/(the same link as I posted above). Once open, you can pull down your year F-body, and it will automatically give you the TRANSMISSION ratio's. I believe this may be the reason our numbers are not matching up. The ones you are using are a basic guess using tire width, and gear ratio for the rear. This one uses all that info as well, but also inputs the transmission ratio's to give you exactly what the speed is. For examply if you look up my year and model Z (95 M6) it will put in the correct ratios of everything. That equals out to be 187 @6200 RPM in 5th for my car. This also would put 196 MPH, at 6500 RPM, not 7500 RPM.
