View Full Version : How to stop wheel hop in a 68?
blknblu68 10-11-2007, 12:39 PM well I need to know the best way to get rid of wheel hop?
after i replaced the engine, new clutch ,pressureplate, thow out bearing, pilot bushing,u-joints front and rear of drive shaft, trans and motor mounts,I now notice some horrific wheel hop if i try and pop the clutch at any more than 1000 rpm??
So what is the best way to stop it? I have read a new poly diff. nose bushing would do it but is it really that simple?
Thanx Tony
SCHOON 10-11-2007, 03:32 PM There must be some kind of traction bars for a Vet.
I had a real bad case of wheel hops with my 69Z and by adding the traction bars that are designed to eliminate wheel hop, theydid they trick.
C3 Starship 10-11-2007, 10:29 PM My guess is to check your shocks. I think that if they are weak, they would allow your rear to "hop".
I seriously doubt that a new front diff bushing would do the trick. If you are getting a "clunk" upon acceleration, you could need the bushing replaced.

OK whats a real good vette shock that wont kill my wallet like koni or billstien??
Texas Jim 10-12-2007, 09:13 AM Yes, traction bars eliminate wheel hop- stop the rearend from wrapping up. Sad to say that I don't know what type of bars the 'Vette uses, if there is such a thing for the 'Vette. It's always "ladder bars" for coil springs and the bar/tube w/ snubber for leaf springs. I know the 'Vettes you see at the drags usually have the solid axle housing and have done away with the independent. **(Heavy shocks would help-I see it was already mentioned.) I can't say that I've ever heard of wheel hop being a typical problem w/ the 'Vette. Surely some company makes a bar/stabilizer for the "Vette. A single center bar perhaps??? I'll keep my ears open. Someone here will find the answer. There are quite afew active and smart guys who watch this C-3 forum constantly.
C3 Starship 10-12-2007, 07:12 PM I have Blistens that came with my suspension kit. I really can't give you a good brand that won't give your wallet a hard hit. I'm just not that knowlegable on shocks.
Texas Jim 10-13-2007, 07:51 AM C3, Is it all in the shocks on the 'Vette as far as preventing wheel hop? I'm experienced with the traditional set-ups, but the 'Vette w/ that cross-leaf is something I don't know about. I went to the "Lakewood" site and they make nothing in the way of traction bars for a 'Vette. The tech guy I spoke with at Jegs mentioned drag shocks. I do know that you can buy adjustable drag shocks that are streetable.
blknblu68 10-13-2007, 08:10 AM I have seen acouple home made single type traction bars. But i think i will start with a good set of descent shocks first.
i have a coil over type shock on my chevelle with no traction bars and it has 0 wheel hop even with a 475 hp small block in it.

I will have to say, yes. It's the shocks that actually restrick the movement of the spring. Without shocks, you only get the spring action and a bouncy ride. the shocks limit the reaction time of the spring. A sort of stablizer if you will.
You want to talk about a hit to the wallet, go with drag shocks, or drop some more doe, and go for custom made traction bars.
A set of Blistens aren't near as costly. ;)
blknblu68 10-13-2007, 05:12 PM OK starship how much are we talking for a set of rear bilstien shocks?? thanx

Wheel hop, as originally known, was the entire rear axle tryin' to turn like a giantairplane propellor on the end of the driveshaft, from extreme torque. One wheel dug into the asphalt; the other lifted (and hopped). If you google long enough for good pictures, you'll see driver's side leaf springs are always compressed, and passenger's side springs are always 'suspended' (or vice versa -I can't remember). Ladder bars was the only fix for true wheel hop.A vehicle with independant rear suspension (such as a vette, with half-shafts) will not do what was originally known as wheel hop.
The front drive imports are the same way. The kids that drive 'em say they have wheel hop. Nope - same as IRS. Not true wheel hop.
Hi everyone, shocks can be it, but blknblu68 we need some history, have the trailing arm bushings ever been changed and all the other rubber parts, and how about the alignment. VB&P lists several set-ups, you might look there.
What size rear sway bar or not.
Corvettes hook up, if you get all the above just right, you'll hook up just fine.
And what motor, trany and gears. Hope this helps, PG.

M21 4 speed with new clutch, center forcedual friction , pressure plate, fly wheel, throw out
3:73`s in the rear
poly mtor ounts new, new trans mount rubber, poly bushings in the rearsway bar not sure of size?
shocks are probably 10 plus years old and old rubber diff carrier bushing
new u joints , t-arms were done about 5000 miles ago.
will try some shocks and new carier bushing and report back!!
Texas Jim 10-14-2007, 06:19 PM I asked C3 if it could just be all shocks in the case of the 'Vette as that's what I keep coming back to. I spoke to my brother yesterday, another motorhead from the '60s and early '70s. We both agreed that we'd never seen a 'Vette with that problem. (having a "w/i reason engine) With all the suspension parts in good repair, get good shocks and you should be in good shape.
The Chevelle was mentioned. Like I said, I'm familiar w/ all the good old set-ups, but the 'Vette is a different animal. Good Luck, but I think-shocks, shocks.
Please let us know the outcome. Again, Good Luck.
Hi again, everything else is new so new shocks should do it. 10 year old shocks, that seems like a long time for them to still be working, just thought about mine there 6 years old, I bettercheck them out myself. How long do shocks last? PG
C3 Starship 10-14-2007, 08:08 PM "How long do shocks last?"
Until they go bad. I've had 20 year old vehicles and older that the shocks were still good. If you hit a speed bump or a curb too hard, you can blow the seals. So,.... I guess it depends on how rough you are with them, just like any other part.
ksvette 10-14-2007, 11:26 PM I put sensatracs from monroe on all 4 of my wheels. Good shock for normal driving, but stiffens up when hit really hard, and price was not to bad. was able to get em at a local auto parts store too, so no shipping. Took care of most of my problem, I still have some traction issues, but put in a new spring as well (went cheap with 9-leaf) and some adjustable strut rods on the rear, and my problem was cured. Now, if I could only make it hood and not spin........
