The A6 compressor is the old one that is a long cylinder. The newer sharks have the rotary compressor that looks more like an alternator on steroids. Sorry I don't know what year the change was made. Guessing it was late 70s tho. Believe it was called an R4 but not sure.

Very apt description of an A6 A/C compressor. What year is your Corvette?

'80 was the first year for the A4 compression, so anything '79 and older should have it.

GM has been using the short radial compressor on various cars for many years, my '78 vette has the R4 but I've had newer trucks that were still equipped with the A6.

A review of the Chevy parts catalog circa 1981 seems to say that the R4 started sometime during the '76 model year but other entries in the catalog seemed to say the A6 was still used as late as '79. So I'm not sure but based upon 78buckshot's observation, I'd say that mid to late '76 is when the change took place.

FWIW - My 79 has the R4 type compressor.

You know, I recall my '79 Malibu having a R4, but that has little do with Vettes
