Many of us complain about cockpit heat issues, here is one of the solutions to the problem.

This is a replacement heater control valve, it is the new style made out of plastic. My old (metal) heater control valve was not closing all the way (it was corroded on the inside) and the heat stayed on a little bit - all the time. Mostly it fried my ankles and shins. I replaced the heater control valve and the hard plastic vacuum line (i replaced it with a rubber vacuum line) that controls it and it stopped the heat from cooking my legs. It was a cheap fix, under $20.00 and produced great results. The heater control valve is located on one of the heater hoses, mine is under the alternator close to the water pump. It can be done in the driveway, all you need to worry about is capturing your coolant so you can put it back in later!

In '73, they didn't have a heater control valve, so the heater core was always hot. Decided to put a manual valve in the pressure side and discovered that after awhile, the heater core still got hot due to conduction I guess. Anyway I put a manual valve in the return line and viola, cool core.

Has anyone seen a plastic valve with four ports? Guess could just use two of the Autozone ones.

 

I'd just get a plastic "T" fitting and split the vacuum between the two control valves.

I'll check the heater control valve...
Anyway my heating system is not working at all...
the fan goes but no air in the cockpit. I suppose the vacuum controls to switch the ports are gone.
the heating system is a bit complicated ( and boring ) to me...
Since I feel no airflow in the cockpit , I suppose that the heat comes mainly from the headers, above all the part of headers in the engine. I imagine that to wrap the headers would be a great solution but I don't like this solution for aesthetic reasons ( is it a stupid reason?). I will possibly change my mind when the weather will be really hot...

I must admit that riding the Corvette with T-tops off , solves the heating problem. I think I'll do this in every spring-summer ride, not for the heat only but because it's great!

 

Does anyone have any pictures on how the "heater contol valve" is supposed to go. My coolant pipes run right from the engine over to the heater core and it is hot as hell down by my feet. Also, I can hear my fan running but nothing comes out into the car. Any suggestions are welcome. I have a 79 t top.

Hi riley6riley, in my 74AIM they show the heater hoses but no shut off so here's a picture of mine in the car.

Does anyone know if the vacuum signal shuts the valve or opens it?
