I have a 1979 350 L-82 needing a fuel pump replacement. Needless to say. it's a tight squeese just to get to the bolts. But I still haven't been able to get the bolts out because of constraints with space. I was just wondering if I need any special tools for this seemingly straight forward job. Would appreaciate any and all suggestions. Thanks. ,Jack

 

Hello Jack, although I never changed one out on a L-88, I did change the pump on my 73 LS4 about 10 years ago, I remember using a 3/8 drive rachet with a universal behind the socket and a extension 4" or 6" long, you also may want to clamp your fuel line from the gas tank with a small vise grip or something so you don't take a bath in gas, when you remove the pump a metal plug may come out after the drive arm clears the opening in the block, this metal plug rides on a cam lobe which makes the pump arm go in and out, you will need to put a glob of heavy grease in with the plug when ready to reinstall or it will keep falling out before you get the pump's arm in place and the bolts started.
Although the job is straight forward it is a PITA, let me know how you make out.

Thanks, but I can't even fit a 3/8 socket on the bolts on my '79 L82. The socket hits the housing of the old fuel pump. What tool might fit between the bolt and fuel pump housing? And remove the fuel pump on my '79 L82 350? I'm stumped. Thanks. Jack

 

Jack, did you try an offset box wrench ? , should work.
