Hood Clearance Issue with High Rise Intake

Well for starters I registered for a friend and did a search for C3 forums and this one popped up. I did do a quick search but nothing really answered my ? completely.

So here it goes. My friend has a 73' with a 350 eng. with vortec heads and a GM Performance parts Vortec High Rise with a 670 Holley Street avenger with a Stock HEI. When the builder was putting the engine together he didnt take into account Hood clearance.
He also has the factory Cal hood and we cannot seem to figure out what air cleaner setup to use. He would like to run a 3 inch element if possible. And he really doesnt want to buy another hood but probaly will have to be done.

I dont think even a drop base air cleaner will fit. Because the front fuel bowl and the hood...theres only like 1 inch cleanance.

I really appreciate any and all help. Thanks

RE: Hood Clearance Issue with High Rise Intake

Did you mean Factory Cowl hood... as in the original hood? Trust me, a high rise manifold will not work with a stock hood. Been there and tried everything. I had to use a different stock style hood with a 2.5" rise in the tunnel. Check out this site http://vanacorvette.com/. I used their hood with a drop base from a '69 (original Holley carb on the engine) and a 3" K&N filter with a flow through top. Instead of a wingnut attached to the stud in the carb, I used a 3" 1/4-20 pan head screw into the carb. That gave me exactly 1/2" clearance between the air filter and the bottom of the hood. Not sure what to use if you cant use a drop base. I have seen those low profile Webber style chrome mesh filters that sit right on the top of the carb at Summit Racing, but the stock hood might still be a problem. Gonna have to change the hood or find a lower manifold that performs like the high rise.
Good luck, hope this helps.

Yes the factory Cowl hood. He has ck'd that place out and doesnt like the looks of the hood. So I guess all thats left is to put low rise intake on.

What is the L-88 Hood??

The L-88 hood looks like this one... http://www.zip-products.com/Zip/prod...6AF52553298AB5

He does'nt like the stock style Vanacor hood? It looks exactly like the original minus the cowl vent, and it is 2.5" taller than stock. Nobody will know at first glance that anything is different under the hood.

Past experience tells me that if you mount anything with lees than about 1 1/2" of clearance on top of a Holley, you will have all kinds of issues with flat spots, stumbling on and on. They want a pretty straight air flow.

Ya that air clearner I really dont think would benefit that carb. Well it looks like a low rise intake is in order.

On my 81 I have a Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap intake Quickfuel 830 carb with a Moroso drop base airfilter and 3" element and it clears the stock hood. It is tight but does clear. I can send pics if you want.

This was under a stock hood. The owner bought an aftermarket hood and I modifiedit just to make it "different". The intake is slightly higher than stock but i'm not sure how much. It's a built 350 with a Holley 750 on it and it runs great.
