The L82 is the later performance version of the 350. What year is your Vette, and what is the vin number. I might be able to pull some numbers and tell you. Also, is it the original engine? There is a stamp code on the block just forward of the passenger side valve cover. Those numbers will coincide with the numbers after the suffix code of the vin.

VIN#1Z37J5S401288-IM SURE THIS IS A PLAIN JANE VETTE BUT YOUR HELP IS AWESOME! CANT SEEM TO LOCATE ENGINE NUMBER THOUGH. IT IS A 1975 AUTOMATIC WITH AIR-THE ENGINE HAS BEEN REBUILT BUT IM NOT SURE IF ITS ORIGINAL-HAS T-TOPS. I TRADED A MOTORCYLE FOR THE CAR-HAD THE FRONT AND REAR BUMPERS REPLACED AND THE CAR REPAINTED-NEW DUAL EXHAUST FRONT TO BACK-NEW WHEELS AND RUBBER-SONY 600WATT AMP WITH SUBWOOFER SITTING BETWEEN THE SEATS-BIKE WAS WORTH MORE THAN THE CAR BUT I ALWAYS WANTED A C3-LEARNING ALOT ABOUT C3s AND THEY ARE NOT FOR EVERYBODY THATS FOR SURE.

Your shift cover on your console should tell you whatsize engineand what compression.
8:5 compression is an L48

[align=left]The 5th digit in your vin is a J. That means that it is an L-48 base 350. The engine in your vehicle might not be the original though... you never know... look for the engine ID number on that small pad in front of the passenger side valve cover. If it is original it should have a letter suffix code of CRK and then numbers that coincide with your vin.

Yeah... the 'Fish. Great little town thats getting bigger! I was just on vacation in Peru 3 weeks ago. I was sitting on the roof of a boat on Lake Titicaca, and this guy starts talking about a game called 'over the line', its a beach game started in San Diego by members of OMBAC (old Mission Beach athletic club). Hes talking like he's the only one who ever heard of it. So... I recite the rules... and he ask's me where I am from. I said Montana... and he promptly starts telling me about Whitefish, my hometown and the winter OTL championships. Doesn't sound like much... but we were on a 35' boat in Peru... at 12,000 feet above sea level. Small world...

Enjoy your ride!

A little thing I came across,....
The L48s came standard with a 4 sp, the L82s came with automajics.

I see that from '73 through '80 that both the L-48 (8.5 comp. ratio) and the L-82 (9.0 Comp ratio) were available in the 'Vette. I'm sure that if you look up the block number stamped on the engine, you'll find what one you have.

According to my factory manual, that's what I understand. I was talking with one of the local Vette club members, and he told me that over 5,000 sets of L-82 emblems have been sold. A lot of people were getting the L-82's and puttin' them on L-48's. My car is just such a case. I has the L-82 badges, but the Vin breaks down to an L-48.
( ....and it's a stock 4 sp )
