Default Rear axle shaft noise

I have a 79 that has a noise coming from the rear, just had a 4 wheel alignment done. The drivers side rear inner ujoint u bolts are scrubbing on the differential case. What are the possible causes and solutuons? It only makes the noise occassionally and only at speeds at idle.

Sound like the ends of your axle is wearing out. Jack up that side of the car and grab the wheel and try to push it in and out and see how much it is moving in and out of the rear. Should be very little. If it's alot, time for a new axle.

I checked with the shop that done the 4 wheel alignment plus I checked the endplay. I'm leaning toward the output yolk bearing too. How hard is it to change?

O.K., it's not tomorrow yet.
I just looked it up in my manual. It is quite a job, complete removal of the carrier assembly. The dif housing can be left in place. The bearings have to be removed from the inside out. You need to get inside to remove the yokes too. There are some adjustments to be made when it all goes back together. You may have to buy some tools to do a propper job.
I highly suggest that you pick up a manual for your Vette. I got mine from Ecklers. www.ecklers.com You can get a manual for your specific year of Vette. Every Vette owner should have one. Ya might want the factory assembly manual and wiring too. I havethem, and they are indespencable.
Sorry that I don't go into any detail, [&o]I would have to write about 4 pages for an indepth explanation. [&:]

Have the differential professionally rebuilt by good shop. Or you can buy a new one or a rebuilt one and exchange your's.

Looks like I will be getting some diff work done. I have, thru trial and error, determined that the noise is coming from the limited slip. It sounds somthing simular to brakes scrubing. Only makes noise at a little more than Idle speed when turning, and only when turning. I spent nearly the whole day today messing with it. The diff grease was a little low so I added some Lucas to see if it will quiet the noise if I run it some. If not, guess I'll be pulling it.

Before you open it up, I'd try putting in a bottle of GM Positrac additive and then do some figure 8s in a parking lot to work it in to the clutches. May not do any good but it's easier and cheaper than tearing down and rebuilding if it doesn't need it.
