Hey all, I finally picked up my "new" old vette. A 74 thats been shown a lot of love over the years... Anyways, I have been driving it around for about 2 months and all of the sudden the speedometer stopped working. I got under neath the car to check the connectgion at the transmission & verified that it was still connected, I "jiggled" it around and the the speedo worked for a little while, mainly at higher rpm's but once again, it has stopped working. Could this be a symptom of a bad cable or bad speedo gear? or could it be that my headlight fluid is low? Or possibly that my air freshner needs to be changed? any info would sure help, thanks.

 

My first suspect is that your muffler bearings have gone bad. [&o]My second thought would be the cable. It may be broken inside and the ends of the windings may be catching on each other, which is why it worked again for a short time after "jiggling" it. If not that, your tail lights are out of alignment.

 

Another possibility besides the head itself would be the speedo gear in the tranny. It's plastic and relatively easy to take out and check.

 

or...... the thingamaflitchy isn't seated right in the dumajigger housing and thechingadarra bearings are warn and out of hooozey!

But it really sounds like the cable is shot to me. Cheers

If it is the drive gear, make sure you get the right one. I have taller tires on mine, and put in a stock 22 tooth gear. I did gain 13 mph at 70. Who needs stickers when you can go faster with the wrong gear...eh Dave...
