I went through a local carwash and the cleaning system ripped the stingray letting right off the right side of the car and broke it in half. *I was beyond pissed* Anyways, fast forwarding to the present where I'm fixing it. I am ordering a reproduction of original lettering from ecklers, but what type of adhesive do I need to use to mount it firmly back onto the fiberglass?

 

Sorry to hear about that. Probably should stay away from those car washes. They can be brutal some times. Anyway try the 3-M double sided pressure sensitive tape. The new lettering should have a couple of nipples on them and some stays for behind the the fiberglass panel. The stays will keep the lettering on and the tape is really just to keep it flush against the panel. Installed them this way on my 72 and have had no problems with them. I got my replacement "Stringray" script from www.docrebuild.com it came with the tape, you can call Ecklers and see if they have the tape on them. PG.

 

Hand Wash Only!

Car washes are brutal on your paint. Lots of dirt gets imbedded in the washing pads that spin against your cars finish, it acts like fine grit sandpaper and your car comes out with hair fine scratches all over it. You also run the risk of losing an emblem, a mirror, a wiper arm or any other loose piece of trim. That's when everyone who works at the car wash suddenly forgets how to speak english....

Those damn auto car washes should be out-lawed! Even the hot water/pressure sprayeris bad for your paint as it softens it and allows dirt to scratch it easily. I always use cold water and mild liquid soap, and not an over-amount of the liquid soap either. I never wash the car on a windy day either as the dirt and dust in the air will get in the water prior to wiping off the water beads with a shammy and scratch the paint. This may sound real crazy and that I'm being overly picky, but if you want your paint to lookthe best it canfor the longest amount of time possible, you should take every precaution possible. The paint on my 'Vette will be ten years old in January and with the exception of a small handful of little nicks and scratches, it looks damn good.
