Default Strange clicking noise-1975 Vette

I took the car out today for a nice little ride. Filled her up with some premium gas, came home shut the car off and heard a strange clicking noise coming from the rear of the car???? It lasted about 20 seconds-just kept clicking. This is the second time thats happened-I thought the first time was just a fluke-but now I'm worried--very worried---Has anyone ever had this happen? Love to anyones thoughts on this one.....

Could just be the cooler weather. When metal parts heat up, they expand. When they cool down, they contract. The metal joints can "click" when cooling down. This can come from your mufflers, muffler or tailpipe mounts, tailpipes (if they aren't welded), and even from brake caliper mounts... pretty much anywhere metal is attached to metal of differing temperatures.

Hey Bill,

I hear what your saying about expanding and contracting metal but this sounded electrical? Is there a possibility it could be something controlling the fuel?

Only thing that comes to my mind, is an electric fuel pump, but I'm pretty sure you have a mechanical pump attached to engine. If it were an electric fuel pump, it would stop working when the ign. is turned off.So,...... I agree with bill.

I will bet it's your power antenna. Everytime that I cut my car off I hear that antenna going down. Maybe yours does a few extra laps around the backend.

Are the clicks randomly spaced or even? I suspect, like the others that you are hearing exhaust system cooldown, especially if the exhaust system is relatively new. Also '75 was the first year for the cat convertor under the passenger's feet and had some heat shielding (I believe) which also will make a click/snap noise as it cools down.

Unless the engine has been modified and had CR increased, you are wasting your money on premium gas.

If you have a power antenna and the motor is unable to retract it until it trips the limit switch, it will make a clicking noise as the slip clutch slips to prevent stalling and burning up the motor.

Hmmm... Harleyboy brings up a good possibility. Do you have a power antenna? And yes, the sheet metal cool-down can sound like electrical short "ticks" (in case you don't have one).

I had a similar noise and it turned out to be the emergency brake.
One of the springs fell into a rear caliber.

Did it still make a noise with the car shut off?

Sounds are random and do not occur everytime I shut the caroff. Sounds can travel maybe it is the fuel pump. I don't have a power antenna so I can eliminate that possiblity. Is it possible that its the sending unit? I guess I'm going to have to wait for it to happen again and really try to pin point the noise.
