Default Want a new engine..

Hi all,
I've just about decided on getting Hooker sidemount headers and pipes, but have a few questions.
I don't know what kind of engine would fit in my 76's engine compartment or what would be compatible. Also hoping to put a TH400 with it. I'm aiming to get atleast 600 hp. I'm planning on getting the Hookers first then the new engine and a TH400, so the engine has to be compatible with the headers. Would I be better off getting my 350 stroked to a 383 or higher and getting a supercharger? Or could I find a small block that would be compatible with the headers? The engine has to be able run on pump gas, the car is my daily driver.
Thanks in advance!

That is a sick engine. The videos of it are phenominal. The only problem I can see with it is that it can't run on pump gas.

As you probably known, you can put a big block in your 76 but it's more that just fitting it in there. There are a lot of other considerations. Check with C3's experience in his "hangin from a tree".

WRT the headers, you'll need to decide whether you're going small block or big block first.

What could I get my 350 bored to, and still have it safe for daily driving?

I don't reccomend goin' over .040 on a bore.
If the engine doesn't need it, I'd keep the stock bore and just build the innerds. You can get penty of street friendly horses.

383 is a popular choice for a small block.

"Choose from the street worthy 620hp 9.6:1 version or the fire breathing 720hp 12:1 version."

At 9.6:1 compression - I would think that pump gas would be fine. The 12:1 version is another story.

You know, he could get the 12:1 720 hp monster just to say he owns one and then retard the timing so much that it will knock on 92 and melt his headers...

Supposedly, 10.5:1 is the limitusing 93 Octane fuel.
And 600 hp from a small block, even a 383, is pushing it. I saw that "Hot Rod" magazine has an article thismonth on a 383ci w/ 615hp but I haven't read it. I seriously doubt if it's anything for daily driving.
The December, 2006 issue of "Chevy High Performance" magazine does a number of tests on a 383ci (well, a 388, still w/ the 3.75 crank) that Dinos-out at 523hp. That's using AFR heads, aVictor Jr.andMighty Demon 850, a 284 Comp-Cams hydraulic roller w/ 1.6:1 roller rockers and custom headers w/ 3" collectors, and a pretty good bottom end. This engine could be a daily driver, but one hell of a daily driver. Going any further than this engine for the street is "letting it all hang out."
"Engine Masters" magazine says that Shell gas holds aboutthe highest standards for pump gas. They may still have the article at: http://www.enginemasters.com .
