Weak air flow from 69 blower
 

My original heater/ac blower is weak in my 69 convertible.It still has all settings working, but not much air flow. Could I replace it with a newer model blower that forces more air? If so, which model?

Welcome to the Corvette Forum. Are you sure that the ductwork is clear and doesn't have any wildlife homes (nests) in it? If so, a new blower motor should do the trick. A point of interest on the GM blower motors (at least the ones in our generation Corvettes) is that they use a bronze bearing that is lubricated by a oil-soaked felt washer on each end.When the felt runs dry, the bearing soon goes dry and the fan will usually run slower and/or noisier. [:o] After I discovered this, I successfully re-oiled the felt washer by drilling a hole in the housing next to the washer and adding oil using a small syringe. Got to keep that numbers matching blower motor, dontcha know. :D Actually I did this while I was in the Navy and disposable income was on the low side. Today would probably just go buy a new one.

Thanks for the reply. I have owned my 69 since 1974. I replaced the blower many years ago when it was making a lot of noise so numbers may not be the same. As you know these c3's get very hot inside during the summer. I have already put down a new layer on insulation on the floors, which has helped, but now that I am older the heat gets to me more. I cleaned the duct work and sealed it last summer, but the flow is still weak. Would using an 80's blower work?

If it will fit, I wouldn't see why not. I sort of remember a discussion of this in a magazine or forum several years ago. Might take some measurements of a C4 motor to see if it'll fit.

Hey Longtimeowner, did your duct cleaning include cleaning the heater or a/c core they can act like a dirty air filter. Maybe some of the pro's can tell you if the air is routed thru there all the time or just when directed to.

Good call Flying Low. The air always goes thru the evaporator but only goes thru the heater core when calling for heat.

Thanks all for the advice. I have since talked to a fellow shark owner nearby that has replaced his blower motor with a C4 type. He had to make a 3/4 inch gasket because the assembly is larger. He tells me it makes a big difference. Once the snow is gone and I can make more room to work on it, I am going to replace the old motor for a C4. Thanks again.
