Why is this such a mystery??

Why is this such a mystery??
I'm going insane about this...
Posted a similar thread in a different forum and needless to say here I am with no more answers on the subject than when I began.
We have an auto repair facility here but nobody can seem to answer a question for us. 1981 Corvette with a code 15.
it misses and runs rough until it gets warmed up. Check engine light on and off until it warms.
GM people, Corvette dealers, ...parts people nobody has any idea the pigtail question.
So I'm hoping I can get headway here.
There is a coolant temp sensor near the thermostat
It looks like white plastic with a flare on it.
The problem is the pigtail is not in the greatest of shape.
Attempting to replace this the only plug available from GM or from Dorman has 1 wire.
The customer's car has two wires.
I cant get anyone to confirm in any direction what and or why this was once 2 wire and now 1 wire.
I have a suspicion on what GM did but I'd like it confirmed.
Here are some pictures
Thx in advance for any replies

Welcome to the forum. The only two things I can offer would be to try to check out another '81 Corvette or get a copy of the factory service manual and check the wiring diagrams and see if that's of any help.
