RE: Tell me is this safe for a wheel?
Balacing will take more weights, due to the extra metal from the weld, but it should be O.K.Who ever is doing the welding should be responcible if the wheel fails though.

RE: Tell me is this safe for a wheel?
I am assuming the rim is aluminum as I can't see steel cracking from such a small impact. It depends on the alloy in the rim and the rod or wire they use. Is the rim cast or machined from billet? Also it depends on if they MIG it or TIG it. Different heat and bonding characteristics between the two. Are they going to prep the crack by drilling and beveling it on both sides? or just do a top fill? How good is the guy doing the welding and where is the rim on the car? Could be OK and could be a disaster. If the rim cracked just from the caliper falling on it it must be brittle and if it was cracked bad enough to let the tire go flat the crack must be of some size and may have allowed the rim to become mis-shapen. Don't know of too many shops that will take on the liability of doing this. Never know if there is any other damage waiting to come out. The heat from welding will have an effect on the rim as well. Might make a good spare but for every day driving a bit iffy. Good luck with it and keep a close eye on it. Cheers.

I've had several aluminum rims repaired over the years and if the shop knows what they're doing, you shouldn't have any problems. If they have the proper equipment, it can be put an a lathe and rebalanced.

I took acracked rim off of the "Starship", and will "schmit" can it. Actually, I took off all the mags, ( Bubba had used washers on the wheel studs to get the rims to clear the calipers ),and went with stock steel rims. My personal opinion is that the rims are a major safety factor. I lay pretty hard into the twisties sometimes, and I don't want the slightest doubtconcerning equipment failure.I don't know of a shop in my area that I would trust to such a job. There may be one that can do it, but I don't know of them. As others have mentioned above, you shouldn't have any probs. Sounds like you have found an experienced shop.
It's just a personal thing with me. I don't like to loose sleep,.....wondering.
