Default 3rd Brake Light Changing - C4

How on Earth do I replace the bulbs in the 3rd brake light on my '86 C4? Thanks.

There are 2 nuts accessable after you raise the hatch that you loosen and then there will be some screws holding the lense to the body. Don't worry, its an easy job. Bulbs may be a little hard to find, but they are available. [8D]

With my Hatch up, there are three odd looking nuts holding the 3rd Brake Light Assembly (I think). The nuts are not standard and it appears a special tool is needed - does this sound right? The nuts are round with two holes on either side. Anyone know what I am talking about?

They are probably torx head bolts. Don't remember the size. [8D]

No they are NOT Torx Head bolts. They look like flat washers with two holes on either side. Again, seems a special tool or wrench is needed? I can't be the only person here that has had to replace these bulbs? As to the cost, yes, they are expensive Halogen Bulbs, about $6 each at my local Baxter's.

Mech259, for those of us with convertibles, do we have an actual light, or is the third brake light just a red "reflector" ?

Well, if it is just a reflector, it has a wire going to it for no known reason. Again, I have an '86 Targa. Would really like to know how to change the bulbs in that darn 3rd Brake Light.

the bulbs area #891. they DO NOT twist out . pull them out. the new ones will have two prongs sticking out, if it is the same as my '88. don't force the new ones in, because they can pop ! I found that out. Cheapest place her was NAPA.

Great, once someone tells me how to get to the bulbs, I'll pull them out.
