Default Differential questions

OK, so I’ve seen a lot of information out there about the Dana 36 and they’ve discontinued all thick gears for the two series case but you can still get gears for the Dana 44 HD if you have one!!! But my question is if you have what they call a Dana 36 with the 307 gear option in it is that truly considered a dana 36 series or is that a Dana 36 series 3 and can you use the standard Dana 36 gears in it for ratios like 3.54or 3.73 that are not thick in that . I guess the real question is is a factory, Dana 36 with the 3.07 gear ratio considered the same as the dana 44hd that came in the manual transmission cars?and can you use dana 44hd gears in the 3.07 factory diff?

Welcome to the forums. If I was looking for that answer I would visit my local gear vendor for a good answer for what fits what and what's available these days.

The Dana 44 should be physically bigger. And when you go swapping gears in one of those there's more to it than just buying gears. You can't put 4.10s in a 3.07 without changing the carrier. There's 2 different carriers in the 44 series rear end, high side, 3.73 and higher ratio gears, and low side 3.90 and lower gears. The actual housing is the same. Cost wise I think you would be ahead of the game finding a rear end out of a parts car set up the way you want it.

so are the factory 3.07 diffs behind an automatic a 3 series or are they a dana 44 ? I need to know so i can buy gears….i want 3.73 but you can only get them for dana44 now because all manufacturers quit making thick gears so if the 3.07 factory axle uses the same gearas that a dana 44 use than i can get this axle i found and get gears for it.

I believe ( and I could be wrong) that you need to check the tag on your axle itself, there should also be numbers cast into the case, somewhere. It's been a few years since I've done any gear work. I don't remember the series 2 or 3 Dana's. Local four wheel drive shops are a fabulous resource for gears and usually know who does it.

my car is 92 but my axle is dana 36 and you can’t get gears for it anymore other than the 2.59 that is in it or 2.73 …i want 3.45,3.54,or 3.73 so i need a dana 44 to do that but no real luck finding one that is not 2grand or more…. I found a axle that is factory 3.07 gears and im trying to figure out if the factory 3.07 diff is a series 3 and if that’s the same as a Dana 44 and will accept the Dana 44 gears. Or is the 307 gears from the factory axles just Dana 36s with thick gears therefore dana 44s won’t work in this case. or is the 307 gears from the factory axles the same as dana 44 and if i buy it i can get what ever gears i want for it because it uses same gears as dana 44

I'm going to visit a friend of mine on Friday, he parts out Corvettes. I know he has a few 44s kicking around. I'll ask him if he's more up to date on the interchange than I am. I don't think any of the 36 gears will work in a 44. Or vice versa. Trying to help here...

yeah i know the gears from a 44 wont fit a 36 but ask him if the 3.07 factory diff in an automatic c4 is a 44 because there are people talking about how its got to be a series 3, which I believe will accept any three-point something gears that are thin stock and not a thick gear! And i totally appreciate you helping me out with what you can.
