Default High beam switch on 1993

Hello All, I just bought a 1993 LT1 in beutiful condition (will post pictures soon). But like all used cars it does have a couple of small issues. First the high beams do not work. Pass everything else at DMV except that. When I pull on the lever I feel nothing. Should I replace the lever, is the switch itself in the lever or the steering collum? I also have a small oil leak coming from near the firwall. Does anyone have experiance with this type of leak. Can't really see where it is coming from. And finaly the last little problem is the dash lights and the LCD speedometer screen gets dim sometimes. I have played with the dimmer switch to see if I can duplicate the problem, but have not been able to. Any help would be great. Thanks

I have the same problem with the high beam on my '93 and would like to know the resolve. As for the display going dim, does this happen intermittently or just when you go into shaded areas like parking garages or under trees? I think there is a photo cell on the dash that dims the display when you go into darker areas so that it isn't too bright.

I will keep you posted on what it takes for the repair on the high beams. I have seen the lever assembly for sale for $60 which is a good price, but the lettering on the lever is white instead of orange. The dimming dash just happens intermittenly.

I had the same problem with my 1996 LT 4. The machanic tested it and discovered when the tilt steering wheel was in the up-most position the lever would engage and the switch could be activated. When the wheel was in its normal driving position (tilted down) it wouldn't engage. He had to partially disassemble the steering wheel column and tighten something up so the lever would engage the switch in all positions. Try the turning on the high beams with the steering wheel tilted all the way up and see what happens. It didn't cost a lot to get it fixed.

Is the oil leak seeping through the firewall into the cabin?

No, just leaking on the ground when the engine is warm. Thanks for the help.

First the high beams do not work.
I had the same problem on my 93 when I bought it. I had my wife slowly work the lever while I was able to get a little WD40 sprayed in there. So far (knock on wood) no problems and it works fine.

Thanks for the help so far guys. I have ordered a tech manual from e-bay. It is not here yet. I took the cover off the steering colum and can see that the high beam switch is operational, but the striker that operates the switch fell off. I tried to figure out how the striker goes on but have not been able to yet (hard to stay upside down for long under the dash). Does anybody know exactly how this part goes or can e-mail me the page from the manual. My e-mail is lourib727@hotmail.com Thanks

THe lever is not the problem. Your dimmer switch is bad or out of adjustment. I've replaced several GM dimmer switches and they exhibit the same characteristics you describe. [8D]

Last night I thought I would see if my dimmer switch would work with the steering wheel tilted all the way up as mentioned in the earlier post. Oddly enough, it does work in this position. So now I just have to remember to adjust my tilt prior to operating the dimmer and everything will be great!!!
