I've heard about guys doing this without having practiced and ending up with a cracked front windshield[:@]
Not sure how or why...
Just a rumor I heard on a forum[sm=icon_cheers.gif]

This guy at D&D Electronics, who claims to be an "expert" on Vette's, told me that it had something to do with the cable snapping and smacking the windshield[sm=dontgetit.gif]...
I think he might have been doing a little too much [sm=alcoholic.gif]
I've looked over the FSM and really do NOT understand how it could happen either.
Thus the reason I said it was a rumor
Guess I should hold-off on the knee-jerk responses[sm=icon_cheers.gif]

If you have a broken or malfunctioning hood latch cable here's the cheapest and best way to make your toolfor the job. Get a long paint roller and break off the part where the slpips over. Then straighten out the rod with a hammer. Next make 90 degree bend in the end about 1 to 1.5 inches long. Then bend the end with the plastic handle 90 degrees. Slip the tool end into the hood latch area through the door jam area, with the door open. You should, with patience and finese, get it to "pop" in no time. If you look into the hood latch area through the door jam with a flash light, You'll see the terminated end of the cable. It looks like the end of a bicycle brake cable. This is where the tool should insert, pointing down toward the ground. Once you get it in there twist roward the engine. Pushing the latch right for the driver and left for the passenger side. Remember, be patient! I beats the hell out of paying 500.00 bucks to a body shop. You can do it.
Screw the tool in the future and mount you some wires to each cable release under the hood. Then if the in car release fails all you have to do is pull on each of your emergency release cables and you can get that hood open in about 30 seconds. These pictures are large and of poor quality but I think you get the idea. BTW, with the hood closed you cannot see these cables unless you look at just a certain angle between the windshield and the hood. No one will know they are there:
