HOW DOES THE 4+3 TRANS WORK
My 86 coupe also has the 4+3. Do you have a push-button on top of your shift ****? That button should engage/disengage the overdrive part of the unit.
The car needs to be up to operating temp before the OD will engage. If it does not 'drop down' into OD, try clicking the button to see if it reacts. My own OD switch is misbehaving, so I am having the switch replaced.
When operating properly, and turned ON, it will automatically drop into OD as you shift through the gears. If you decide to step hard on it, it will drop out of OD to normal drive for better acceleration. It may stay in normal for awhile before it drops back into OD.
If your button has no effect on the unit, maybe your switch is dead.
Another possibility: if you have a cold thermostat in the car (160), the coolant may not be getting warm enough for the unit to engage.
Another possibility: perhaps one of the sensors (coolant temp, speed, gear selection) that feed the OD controller may be dead.

Has anyone tried to rebuild their overdrive unit? Mine is slipping, so I thought I might give it a shot. The alternative is to get a rebuilt one, so if anyone knows a reputable place to get one of those the information would be appreciated.
