Default I need help with ignition switch problem.

I have a problem with either the key lock cylinder or the ignition switch on my '85. When I try to start the engine the key is very hard to turn and when it does turn nothing happens. I have a Haynes repair manual and it explains the switch removal step by step. The only problem is they left one very important step out. How in the world do you get to it. The thing is on top of the steering column back under the dash. Unless you are 40 pound six year old there is no way to reach it and see what you are doing. Any help?

Probably have to drop the column down to get enough clearance.

My muddled old brain finally thought of that. But thanks for the reply.
