Default Looking at a clean 87 w/50k miles - I have a question...

Hi guys - I have a question about a very nice 2 owner 87 Corvette I looked at tonight. Asking price is $7,000 and the car has only 57k on the clock, very VERY stock car - never touched or hit, still in original (and somewhat shining) Red paint...

After letting the car run for a bit the owner and I were talking about the new (to him) 03 'Vert he just bought. The hood on his 87 was open and I started to smell that anti-freeze smell... I then noticed puddles of anti-freeze in the valleys of the intake on the passenger side, nothing was leaking, under the car is very clean. But none the less it was just sitting there - where could this have come from? Leaking thru an intake bolt?

Thanks
Dave

If it's been sitting probably an intake manifold gasket, No biggie for a 20 year old car. Nice price.Auto or stick?

A small leak can go bigger! Dont let that slip buy. I hate the smell of anti-freeze....Always bad news comes along with it. YUCK!

take it for a good run if your interested in buying it.No genuine owner trying to sell a car could object to a 25 mile drive and goose it a bit as well. Price sounds right and any leaks above the heads are cheap to fix. Just remember"CAVEAT EMPTOR"

Just had the same leak from the head gasket on that passanger side on my 89. If you can get under the car and look up at the head, right behind the exhaust, if you have a head gasket leaking it will be wet. Let the car get warmed up and watch that area.
My local Vette shop wanted $2300 to replace the head gaskets. Did the work myself for just under $300, not too bad, just took my time and took lots of pictures with the digital camera.
My car has 133,000 on it and I have replaced the intake manifold gasket, and oil pan gasket, both gaskets were cracked and stiff as a board.

Good luck, the price sounds good, for a low miles Vette.

Thanks for the input guys - I'll take a second look at the car tonight - it's an automatic, runs really nice, the only thing wrong with the car is the power antenna doesn't work (besides this leak). If I can talk him down a bit, say to $6k, I'll grab it...

Take care,
Dave

I wonder why it seems so cheap with such a low milegage. Something sounds strange.

Anything is possible - but I see ALOT of C4 Vettes priced very reasonably - just heard of an 89 with 46k on it for $7,500 - I'm now chasing that one too! Feast or famine... you don't want to know what I paid for my 67 GTX in January... I'm on a streak I guess!
