Shorted Wire
This is in regards to my battery light being on. Tonight while I was checking the connections to the battery I pulled the battery out to also check the indicator which said it needed charging (no green led). The positive wire goes to a block that looks like a solenoid but seems to be just a distribution point. Well when I put a new battery in earlier this year it looks like I may have shorted a wire coming off of this. It's quite possible that this is causing my problems. SO MY QUESTION..... This wire comes off the block and into a one inch rubber conection the shorted wire leaves me no room to connect a new wire so what is this black thing????? Is it just a connection that I can resplice a new wire????? It's black rubber molded with a 20 on it. About this long [ ]. There are several coming off this block. Eagerly waiting a reply.

That wire is 20a fusible link. You can buy fusible link in small rolls and just cut that section out and put in whatever length you need with butt connectors. We do it all the time. [8D]
Well I just replaced the fuseable wire. The battery light is still on. The battery voltage was 13.2 when I just took a ride and when I got back it was 12.2. The voltage gauge on the instrument panel seemed to hover around 10-11 volts and slightly flicker with the directionals on. Any thoughts? I'm leaning towrds the alternator I put in being bad. HELP!
Drum roll.... The vette is up and running. Had the rebuilt alternator checked last night. The stator volts were showing O. I got a replacement and installed it this afternoon and all is well. Not sure if the shorted wire caused the problem but now my baby is well. At a stop light it's about 14 volts and climbs a bit when driving. Thanks again mech259. If it ever goes again I'm using ac delco.
