transmission mess
Good morning everyone,
Ok, About two months ago, i had my 700R4 rebuilt in my 85. I have put about three thousand miles on it so far and now it is slipping when it down shifts. It's like this, I can be going down a freeway and when I want to get on it a little, I put the pedal to the metal and you feel it down shift but then the engine races in rpm until the tranny stops slipping and then the rpm settles into normal range. What did my mechanic do wrong? he is a very trusted friend and says that his work is under warranty and to bring it back. The fluid level is at normal level. I guess I just don't know enough about this but it's ticked me off because I thought I wouldn't have any more problems out of this transmission. Any insight into this problem would be greatly appreciated. Why did this happen and what is the cause?

clayton .check your tv cable.if not adjusted right it will cause bad shifting and if not asjudted right it will wipe out your tranny, its hard to tell over the computer.could be something wromg with your lock up.if it is not locking up it will slip,if it is cluches it will slip taking off, mell the oil on the dip stick should smell clean if has burnt smell clutches are bad and oil should be red.if any matalic color that is a sing of clutch were.take it back to your guy and have him make shure the lock up is working right, that tv cabe is very iportant,
Thanks Corvette King. I am at my whits end with this car. I have replaced so much and put so much money into this car. If it weren't for the money I have spent on this car, I would buy a tranny from Summit or Jegs and use this one for a boat anchor. My boat needs a heavier anchor LOL.
Hello Clayton. There is a procedure for adjusting the cable. On the side of the cable where it snaps in the bracket behind your throttle lever, there should be a metal half moon piece inside the plastic housing of the cable. If you can, depress the metal and take the end of the cable housing and push it in all the way til it stops, then release the metal. Now, sit in the car and depress the accelerator all the way to the floor, (you will hear a crunching noise from the cable, but pay it no mind) then the cable will be adjusted properly. Cable adjustment can cause upshift slipping if the cable is to sloppy. By sloppy, I mean to loose. What King means by tv cable is "Throttle Valve" which governs your fluid pressure on the clutch bands. How does the transmission shift normally? Do you think it shifts to quick or to late? Those are signs of cable adjustment. If you get the cable adjusted right, and it still has problems, then you have an internal problem. [8D]
It doesn't shift too early or too late. It just slips on downshifts and it seems to lolly gag a little when going into overdrive. by lolly gag I mean that the shift is very soft and the engine revs during the shift. Thanks for the help guys. I am going to print this page out to show my mechanic that procedure on adjusting the cable. I don't want to tell him how to do his job but maybe he doesn't adjust the cable that way and a new perspective will give him something to think about.
This is a followup on my post. I got the 85 back yesterday and my mechanic said he changed the accumulator springs to stiffen up the shifts. It really shifts great now. It shifts at a little higher rpm and you feel it. There's no slop in between shifts. It actually feels like he put a shift kit in it but he didn't. It wasn't that the transmission was slipping. There was just a lot of slop in between shifts and it was very soft. Can anyone tell me about these accumulator springs? I haven't ever heard of them and don't know much about it. It now feels like my old turbo 350 that I had in my camaro, except of course that I have overdrive. I am very pleased with how this turned out. Thanks for all the previous replies.
The accumulator is part of what holds pressure on the clutch bands or packs and the heavier the spring the quicker and tighter the clutches come in on the drum in side the transmission
thanks mech259. the other thing I like about it now is that it won't go into overdrive until you are at about 55 mph. Before, it would go into overdrive around 30 and seemed out of it's powerband. He told me he adjusted the cables a little too. I am assuming that this all of this has no adverse effects on the longevity of the transmission. Anyhow, I just thought I would update you guys on the situation.
