Default '98 ECM repair

Welcome to the forum. Try Google because I found several places that repair and/or sell '98 ECMs. The prices seem to range from $300 to Mid $400.

You will need to click on the "Go Advanced" button at the bottom of the text box and that will take you to another page where you have options to attach files or photos or videos.

Not sure what happened when you started a new thread but it should appear as soon as you post it.

I'll put your post in a new thread in the C5 section. Then you can post a reply by using the aforementioned button to add your files and pictures.

Can you find any other diodes that are the same size and see if they have the same part number on them? Circuit designers like to use the same part number if possible. If it's a zener, it's probably a 5 volt one but that's just a guess.

Default Please HELP find REPLACEMENT for, or IDENTIFY, UNlabeled bad DIODE on ECM circ board

This is a MAGNIFIED pic showing close up of bad diode with Part # / Label removed (as well as some surface corrosion)

(SEE ATTACHED FILE for ADDITIONAL PICTURES including my ECM)

Hi to everyone. I’m a new member with a98 Base Coupe. I hope you’re all enjoying your cars and/or projects !!

My PCM circuit board has a BAD DIODE on it, and, because money is tight right now and a repair service costs a few hundred bucks, my GOAL is to replace it as a Do-It-Yourself project.

I‘m hoping this can happen thru one of these Scenarios (preferably A):

Scenario A ----- from experience, someone knows, or can tell me how to ascertain, the diode Type and Value in Electronics Industry standard terminology: (EXAMPLE: Type: “Zener” diode; and Value: “5.1 Volts”) ---- so I can then purchase the proper generic component from an electronics supplier such as Digi-Tek etc--VS--trying to acquire a good used GM diode. I realize this is a long shot.

Scenario B ----- someone can come up with the correct good used GM diode they’d be willing to sell me --OR-- tell me where or how I could a obtain one.

One problem here is that once my tech friend removed the corrosion from the diode, the part number / labeling was gone as well. (See 1st picture: Zoomed in on diode at end of red pointer). I searched the Internet for an image of a similar circuit board with that same diode to get the part # off of it – NO luck. If anyone could provide that part number it’d be a step in the right direction.

FYI – the correct PCM Part # is 19332289, which is ALSO found in a 98 Camaro and a 98 Firebird ---- AND 16238212 is stated to also be a valid GM part # per Car-Part.com, as well as ECM service Flagship One. Additionally, multiple Techs have said that GM put the diode I need onto similar circuit boards in OTHER ECM’s that can’t be used in a 98 Vette ---- but I don’t know which cars or part numbers for those ECM’s.

I appreciate any help or input ! Thanks a lot ! TJ

(Sorry this post ended up getting pretty long.)

Wow Marc --- it’s IRONIC that I’ve been working on creating the pretty detailed and comprehensive post that you see now which I finally just got to get thru and appear, and after spending a bunch of time doing that, I find that you just put thru a post at~1:00 o’clock in the morning trying to help me out with the DIODE issue literally 3 minutes before my post hit ---- and we both mention Zener” diodes AND a 5 Volt” value). LOL You’re a good guy! Thanks for all your help !!!

BTW, I would have used a smiley or laughing emoji instead of “LOL” but when I tried to use a couple earlier it said you need approval from a moderator. Is that something you can just put through for me, or do I have to do something special before that can happen ? Obviously, it’s no big deal but it can add a bit of fun.

I think I've got it fixed now so you can use emojis, etc.

Have you verified that the diode is bad?

If after a while you can't find this diode and it is in fact bad, then I would just buy a low signal diode and put it in the circuit and see if it works. Sometimes diodes are put in circuits for electrostatic protection.
