Default Anxious and waiting

This is my first vette. Millenium Yellow C5, LS1,6speed. I took it to Houston and am having some work done on it at MTI. Magnum Supercharger ....changing pulley to a 3 inch. Intercooler, Kook Headers and x pipes, valve train kit with springs, Lanati race cam. It already had the Borla stainless 3inch exhaust and a ported throttle bottle with computer program. I was wondering if anyone has had this done on their corvette and what to expect. I ran the stock B class at the Texas one mile Sat. and posted a 154.09 in the one mile. What do you think on rwhp and anything I missed or should change? Thank you and hope to post a pic when I get it back. CaptVette

I had nearly the same configuration on my car for some years. MTI is a really great group so I think they will get it nailed quickly on a good tune.

Mine was not intercooled, however, and it was an LS6 which has better head ports than your LS1, but that's not that important with the Magnusen (or any positive displacement blower), and should not matter much. I ran 6 lbs of boost and it made a peak 475 RWHP and 460 RWTorq. on a good, calbirated Dynojet, with a pretty mild cam. MTI goes for pretty aggressive cams so I would assume you might get more than I got - maybe up to 500 RWHP, or even a bit more, but you might have a really, really ragged idle (I've always gone for "mild" cams 'cause I want good idle and great low end torque). Best quarter mile (drag radials) was 11.5 at 129.

Another point. I never went down to the 3" pulley but stayed a bit larger. I had an acquitance that used the same shop (Diversified Performance in Apex, NC) who had nearly the same setup on an '04 LS1 and who went to a 3" on his LS1. He got 510 RWHP and 490 RWT. With drag slicks he did an 11.0 @ 133. Less than 500 miles later he blew the engine spectacularly: split a piston and cracked the block. I think it was too much boost.

Thanks Lee for the info.... I was real impressed with the shop....lots of corvettes being worked on and a killer Indy pacer with new yellow/black seats by AL Knoch. I talked to them today and am going to put a pair of them in mine just to dress it up. I will try and post some pics when they are finished. I also am going to record the Dyno test on it when they call. I am hoping to develope more than 525 rwhp with everything I have on it and what they are adding. Anything more will be gravy. I also think they are going to keep the boost down to around 7.5 to 9 and maybe that will be easier on the detonation problems. The only thing left to do might be going to some comp heads and change out the pistons and rods with stronger/lighter ones. But I will wait and see and then decide what direction to go. MTI said the Kooks headers and x pipes are very compatible to my Borla 3 inch SS tubes already on it. I am going to have the huge hood and scoop painted here and probably am going with either all black or a yellow millenium with balck V on the scoop. Have to look and decide on that one. I am really waiting for the Texas One mile in March to open her up .....www.texasmile.com . I am glad you brought up that boost on the charger issue as I too want to keep it down enough to keep that from happening. Anything else you could think of would be appreciated. Thanks . Bill

If you are spending that much, and you are near Houston (that's the only location for an MTI shop I know of) you might consider just buying a good built short block. My son and I bought a built FE 408 from Horsepower Engineering, which is somewhere in Houston (we had it shipped to us in NC) for about $3,800, with upgraded internals (Eagle crank and rods, heavy duty pistons, etc.. We went with iron (90lbs extra) rather than a 402 Alum for the strength.

that's really pretty reasonable, and if you are taking the heads off anyway, the added cost of just pulling the engine and putting them on on a bench, etc., is pretty minor. This way you can pick your compression ratio and you have the peace of mind of solid built internals.

Incidently, the 408 is in our Camaro and doing about 540 RWHP N.A., we're having trouble getting nitrous to tune right but expect eventually about 700 RW.

Hey Patrick , hope to have some pics soon when they call for to pic it up. Also Lee .. I have a friend that has a 402 CI and he has better performance than most C5 and has not supercharged it yet. I know that what you are saying makes the most sense and probably should have gone that route first ....but I am kind of stuck on this for the moment until I do something later. What about later getting the 602 block and just bulldog it with all the muscle? You might be able to pull 800-900 horses off this type block. Comments???

A 402 (or, as I've said in other posts, a 408 cast iron LS6 which permits a slightly wider bore than the AA 402 to get 6 more cubes and only weighs about 90 lbs more) is a hell of a good bargain. They provide just about all the performance of a C5R or LS7 block with its 427 inches, but cost A LOT less. ((Our all-forged 408 short block from Horsepower Engineering was less than $4k complete, SLP sells a short block alum 402 for about the same price)) -- that's only about half the cost of just a C5R block alone: those extra 22 cubes are very expensive. With AFR heads and a radical cam our408 is making 500+ RWHP, so they are very capable.

As to going with a 602 or a 572 or any of the big crate engines, the problem is fitting them into the car, and then getting them past emissions inspection if you want it to be a street car. the 602/572s are deck-heightened 454s of old and a) weigh a lot, b) really are bigger in all three directions, so they would be difficult (i.e. expensive) to fit. By contrast, a 402/408, or a C5R or an LS7 crate engine will slip right in, weights about the same, and uses the same engine computer: they look right and the OBD-II diagnostics, if your state checks them during emissions inspection, will all look right.

I think the only reasonable way to go on a C5 or C6 is to get more cubes 402 or 427 -- that alone, plus having the engine built, forged, etc., gives you right around 470-500+ RWHP reliably from a 402 or more, and then either turbo or SC to add another 150-250 to the rear wheels depending on how aggressive you are with the boost. that gives you about all you can use on the street.

Hey Lee, thanks for your input. I noticed that there is not a whole lot of room for much more in my C5 ..... especially when you look under the hood of a Z06 427 .... There is so much more room than a C5. I have a friend that has the 402 and it is a nice workhorse. It sounds like this may be the only way to go with the C5. Have you ever known anyone to put a big truck block like the 572 or 602 in the C5 with some alternations??? Also if the 402 or 406 is obtainable... what do you think about supercharge/intercool, twinturbo route with cam, headwork and piston , rod change...
We have not touched on maybe going the stroker kit with what I have either....that could be another hp increaser and might help with some of the boost problems with the Magna charger. I am already talking about increase and have not even gotten the beast back from MTI yet.....lol ....you know never satisfied. Thanks again Lee as that does give me alot to think about.
