Cold/Hot A/C and controller knob

Cold/Hot A/C and controller ****
So I've read several threads on here about a/c and the cold on passenger and hot on the driver's side which I am experiencing as well but not even addressing the problem or fact that it may be low on freon, my mechanic said that the problem is in the "****" so to speak and that's where the problem lies. He says it would cost $500 to replace/fix the issue and that was only for the rebuilt part. Sorry, not familiar with all the terms of parts but hopefully you get what I'm talking about. I'm familiar with the fact that it could be the actuator door sticking but the fact that the driver's side **** isn't controlling anything makes me wonder if he's correct. It just spins so he says I have no control to turn it from heat to cool.
Is this possible? I have an "04 C5 convertible with 136,000 miles

Welcome to the forum. Sorry I didn't see this before.
Assuming the cold side is correct temp. and that the temp, can be controlled separately for each side, then either the **** is not controlling the blend door for the driver's side or the blend door actuator is bad/stuck. While $500 seems a little high, I'm not familiar w/ the C4 HVAC. Is your mechanic? You could check w/ a Chevy parts dept or try aftermarket Corvette suppliers.
