Computer Message
Just wondering if anyone has seen a "turn off and remove key for 10 seconds" or something to that effect. I drove about 20 miles to do some work on the vette and when I went to move it....as soon as I gave it any gas, the engine died...it would idle...but die as soon as I gave it any gas. Then I noticed on the computer readout that it was telling me to remove the key for 10 seconds...I ignored it for another try...and same thing. So I turned the ignition off...removed the key for 10 seconds and tried it...and it ran fine. Just wondering if anyone knew what caused this. Thanks.

RE: Computer Message
That sounds like your column lock relay is gone. Normally, when this happens, the next message you'll see is "Service Column Lock". I strongly advise you to install a column lock bypass (about $50). The only C5s that were permanently fixed by the dealerships are the A4s (auto tranny). My car had to be towed to the dealership. After they replaced the relay, I installed the bypass. Getting stuck is NO fun!

RE: Computer Message
I do have the A4 (yes, make fun of me now!)...I got such a good deal on my vette (a 97' with less than 14,000 miles on it)...so I figure I can race this one...it does quite well on street racing....and when I burn this tranny up...I could put in the 6 speed. I could still put 5K in it and then come up to book value......So what I read in another post makes it sound like this column lock bypass was for the manual tranny only????

RE: Computer Message
The dealerships were removing the locking pin (and installing a blocking plate) and relays in A4 C5s only. They would not do this for MN6 C5s due to liability reasons - the A4s tranny shifter locks, whereas the MN6s are more vulnerable to theft after their only locking mechanism is removed. You might want to call a dealership and give them your VIN so they can tell you if the recall is still valid. Due to the widespread complaints about this whole thing, they may just do it for free.

RE: Computer Message
The reason you see that message is because of the Pass Lock security system. If you continue to have the problem, the security system is enabled and you might have problems with the key reader which is built into the ignition tumbler.
