Exhaust
Good morning, I have 99 coupe and am looking for a exhaust to get just a bit more sound from it. I am not looking for anything extreamly loud just a good exaust with some power to it. Can anyone guide me to the right match?
Thanks Chuck
Thanks Chuck
I have a GHL cat back (bought from Lingenfelter) which is 2.75" pipes with dual-dual tips, that runs from the H pipe back, along with Kock's 1 7/8" headers, super-size cats, and a Koch's 3" H-pipe, a combination that has been really good. I had the GHL from before I had the headers of H pipe.
The GHL cat-back is one of two flow-through cat-back designs on the market (that i know about) and I much prefer that type. The standard 'vette exhaust and most aftermarket have the exhaust entering and then leaving each muffler from the same side of the muffler (on the inner, or center side) - this means reversing direction of gas flow in the process. By contrast, in the GHL flow-through design (Borla makes one, too) the exhaust enters on one end of the muffler and exists on the other, never changing direction (this is how most mufflers work).
In my experience this results in a richer sound, which I like better and more important has no resonances (a point GHL advertises). Interesting, the Borla flow-through (some of their designs are not flow through - they offer both) and the GHL sound very much alike: they just sound different tha every other aftermarket kit. The Borla is slightly louder than the GHL.
I choose the GHL largely because Lingenfelter mentioned they had had good results with it on cars modified up to 700 Hp, and I have a really modified engine pushing that limit now.
If it matters, I've dynoed my car in three different configurations and GHL doesn't really hurt performance that much:
open headers (no cats, no H pipe, no exhaust/mufflers) - 594 RWHP
open headers with cats, no Ho pipe or exhaust/mufflers) - 572 RWHP
full exhaust: the headers, the cats, and the H pipe - 564 RWHP
Obviously, its the cats that hurt performance, not the GHL mufflers: 8 HP is not much out of nearly 600 to give up to mufflers.
Yeah. My son wants me just to leave out the cats, but I like the fact that the car really is legal (passes emissions tests fully). I am using the biggest cats I can find, bought them with the headers, but this highly modified, that's just the way it is.
I have the Borla Stinger exhaust with the dual tips and I love it, but it might be too loud for you. From what I have heard Corsa exhaust are pretty tame below 3K RPM's and then open up pretty nicely once you get about 3K.
