Not hard at all really, but a real mess.

Empty the tank, disconnect emission vacuum hoses and electrical connections, and drop the tank.

Getting the tank access ring loose is not easy - you have to use care, and more importantly, try to clean loose dirt around every thing that you disconnect/unscrew, and make doubly sure that all connectors are clean before re-connecting...

Are you sure that your pump is toast?

The car is running rough at idle. someone told me it could be the fuel pump. doing tune up tomorrow hoping it will come out of it.

Not really , the idle does not jump up and down . more like a sputter.

The sputter could be several different things. Coil, Distributer cap, Rotor, ECM in the dist.or lack of litheum grease on the ECM, bad plugs even dirty injecters. Do a basic tune up (plugs, wires, rotor, cap, )first and see if that helps. While doing the rotor and cap check the ECM for cracks to it's body and connecters and look for white lithium grease on the under side. Good luck with it and let us know if you get'er squared away. Cheers

I don't remember dropping the tank...I think you can access the unit from the top on a 84

your fuel pump is the last thing you wanna change (most expensive and hardest) explore plugs wires cap and rotor first before anything too see if that clears up you problem
