There's a pad on the passenger front of the block at the head surface level. That number will tell you what car the engine was in. Should be able to find a site on the web that will have the info. Good luck!

the numbers are gone from the pad,im guessing from being decked? The rear of the block is nearly impossible to see because of the fire wall. Would numbers on the side tell me anything?

The only thing helpful you might find on the side according to my book would be a date code.In the form of letter A-L designating month-two digit number designating day- one or two digit number designating year. F 22 3= June 22 63 or 73 or 83 could be F2263 which would be 63.
The block casting number is only on the bell housing flange and for a small journal corvette 327 would be one of three: 62-65 3782870
65 3858180 300,350 hp
66 3858174 300.350 hp
Heads would have to be 3782461.
This is what I could dig out of my "Cars and Parts magazine" Chevy V-8 Engine casting numbers 1955-93.
Hope this helps!

I didn't even find anything on the side. So am I to understand that your book says that a small journal 327 definitely came with the 461 doubles? If that's the case at least I know its matching numbers.

461's don't necessarily mean vette, they came on everything including 283's and trucks. I did a little checking on intakes and exhausts, there are lots! Nothing I could find was only vette.
