Default 66 big block electrical problem

Trying to help my brother in law who has a 66 big block. At first the problem was the car was surging between 2000 and 3000 rpms-found that the condenser wires were not connected properly. Second problem is that the car will all of a sudden just quite while running. Don't believe it to be a fuel problem since we have addressed all parts of the fuel system and the engine dies suddenly as if there is no longer spark. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Having spent ten years working on a friend's '66 big block, I can tell you that it's a touth slog. Best advice I can offer is to check all of the grounds first. Then check the rest of the connections in the ignition circuitry. Probably should get a factory service manual. Good luck.

BTW, is it a transistor ignition? If so, that is the most likely suspect.

The car was originally a transistor ignition however the module was bad and instead of replacing the module, the distributor was replaced to a non transistor ignition and t type resistor on the firewall.

When it dies suddenly, verify that there is fuel in the bowl. You can do this by seeing if the accelerator pump squirts.

Since it's been rewired for a non-transistor distributor, I'd check all of the wiring including grounds.

Its will be workable for you take off the cap and rotor and bump the engine until the points are on one of the distributor bumps and set the gap with a feeler Gage. This will get it close enough to start.good luck
