LT5 Engine

RE: LT5 Engine
Here is a link to some generic info on the web about it. It was used in only the one model for a few years more than a decade ago.
Opinions will vary, and no doubt I am calling somebody's baby upgly, but, in my experience, which is not extensive with this engine, I've learned:
1) It IS a very good engine: all aluminum, DOHC, four values/cylinder, etc., in excess of 400 HP in its max form.
2) It is a very expensive engine in every way, to buy, to maintain, and to keep tuned, and to find parts for (heads, etc.).
3) It is quite durable if taken care of well, but suffers a lot if neglected.
4) The LT5 is notorious for the variability of its power output: some engines are strong, some much weaker, by as much about 25-30 HP. This probably has something to do with the difficulty in tuning it (or the fact that some shops just can't do it well) but its a fact.
5) You really just have to want one because there is no abiding advantage to it:
- A stock LS6 (2002 405 HP rating) produces more torque and HP.
- A stock LS6, LS1, LS2, or even LS7, is slightly lighter and compact (easier to fit into a car) than the LT5.
- Any stock LS1, 2 or 6 is much cheaper to modify and will produce more gains that equivalent amounts of money spent on the LT5.
