C5 Got me good

I've been reading on your forums for a long time but never really posted. Figured I'd post a story of how a C5 got me good.

It was after work, around 7:20pm, and I'm on my way to pick up my daughter. Riding in my GTO, and minding my own business. I usually pay attention to the headlights behind me but I was solid daydreaming or something since I had no Idea a C5 vette had been behind me. I'm sure he got a chance to read my plates and hear the exhaust on my GTO which in itself hints that this is no normal GTO. None the less I was oblivious to him being behind me on this one lane road.I'm coming up to my turn, and so I move over to a left hand turning lane and slow down getting ready to make my turn, still unaware of the vette. Just then, the roar of a demon exhaust revs next to my passenger windowand scares the living crap out of me, I jumped like someone that never heard a car rev in there life.

I could of kicked myself for being such a candy cane. The vette was just giving a friendly "hello" rev and my daydreaming self was caught unaware. I swear I laughed pretty hard at myself for at least a good two or 3 minutes. My car runs longtube headers, catless mids, and corsa sport catback. I'm use to the sound of exhaust...it just killed me that I got caught off guard by the vette hehe. Maybe a lame story for a first post, but thought I would share. I love vettes, and if I didn't need a backseat I would of gotten a C6 instead of my GTO. Love my GTO though...need to convince the wife to let me have a C6 and a GTO hehe.

Cool story, thanks for sharing with us!! Those GTO's are right wicked cars, no doubt about it! And yours is warmed over, eh? Makes for a nasty beast! But, yeh, you just cannot beat the glory of a Corvette, that's for durned sure! Post some pictures of your GTO, if you can, I'd love to see it. :)

And don't be afraid to jump in here, bro, we're all in love with the same cars and are a real friendly group to chat with. [8D]

Thanks....yeah I just got to ride and drive a new 07 vette and it was a very diffrent very nice ride. The handling in stock form is vastly superior to that of the GTO...it's just night and day. Here are some pics of my car and a few vids.

:(I wish I had a supercharger whine to listen to. I know this is off topic but what did you mean by demon exaust?

RE: C5 Got me good

oh, I just basically meant the vettes exhaust definately wasn't stock and it roared loud as can be when he revved it next to my window.

RE: C5 Got me good

Do you know how he gets his car to be like that....Particular exaust or engine mods? Possibly any tips from experience with your exaust?

RE: C5 Got me good

Yeah, it's actually pretty easy so long as you don't mind paying for the parts. First way would be to put Long tube headers on, no cats, and then in your catback exhaust go with a system that only has mufflers and no resonator. Or for really loud, no mufflers or resonators.

But if you don't want your car to be crazy loud all the time, then I would recommend Longtube headers, cat or no cat midpipes, and then a catback exhaust that has resonators and mufflers. This would be pretty good throaty sound on a regular basis. Now what you do is put in what they call cutouts. It's basically a "Y" in the middle of your exhaust that has caps over it. You open the caps up and your exhaust is now dumping just before a lot of the sound deadening devices. This will potentially be very loud, even on an otherwise stock exhaust system.

The sound of exhaust is a particular thing that everyone seems to have a diffrent opinion on. Over at ls2gto.com they have an entire thread in there exhaust section that's dedicated to diffrent exhaust sounds based on diffrent parts.

The C5 in question that made me jump could have one of many diffrent combinations of exhaust. While I could easily recognize that his exhaust wasn't stock, I couldn't guess as to the exact configuration he had. Hope this helps.

RE: C5 Got me good

I got true dual gutted cats and no mufflers**straight tips** Its loud but I want it louder even at idle. I had flowmaster 40 series before this set up with 2 cats and the stock reasanator......and it was not like I expected. I like the way the mustang cobras sound. I would like that tone but three times louder.:DI guess this is as loud as I can get unless I go headers but I dont think that will change the sound will it?

Blast2hell 04-15-2007 01:52 PM

RE: C5 Got me good

It will change the sound some, but it may not give you the effect your looking for. If you want loud, try getting some exhaust cutouts put in. Manual ones will run you about 90 bucks for two, and electric ones can be up to about 400 bucks for two. That will make it a lot louder guaranteed. And be cheaper then headers if it's just sound your going for. You'll also see some HP gains from cutouts.

RE: C5 Got me good

You can buy electric cutouts from QTP that can be installed just ahead of the catback exhaust. With a push of the button you can go to fully open headers. Believe me, you get LOUD! Then, if you see a cop, push the button again to go back to quiet. They are a lot of fun.
