Default no laughing....

Ok, I finally got to baseline the '84. It's a stock 3.07 auto Crossfire car. K&N filter, and ram-air mod. I ran a 15.3 at Houston Raceway Park this Sunday. Road and Track got 15.5 out of a 3.31 rear geared 4+3stickshift car. WooHoo, not bad for a 23 year old car w/112k on it! Mods are forthcoming now that the stage is set. The really fun part was scaring an 02 SS Camaro when i got 3 or 4 lengths on him off the line(heads up), he was runnin' drag radials but couldn't launch very well. My buddy brought his boosted, chipped, intake/exhaust modded, stick Passat and we ran 3 times, 3 wins for the old Vette! His car did come on strong on top though, his trap speeds were consistantly 2 mph better than mine, but he was consistantly 2nd. The old crossfire really feels like it's runnin' outta breath on top. On the way home we did a little 75 mph roll on to a little over 130, the Vette vibrated a bit ,not tires but hard to isolate, anyway he got a couple lengths on me but couldn't just run away and hide. Fun time anyway. I did get smoked at the track by a 440 GTX and a Firehawk too, but my turn's comin' !

Overall sounds like you had a fun night. I have never raced my car (or any of my cars) at the track and I am really looking forward to taking the Vette out this spring and she what both she and I can do. So now that you have been seriously bitten by the bug, what mods are you expecting to do to the car now?

I'm gonna keep it to bolt ons for now as the car runs well and doesn't use oil(Mobil-1 10W-30). The concept of an engine being worn out at 100k doesn't hold up any more. That said, here goes. X-Ram intake, I've talked with a couple of folks who've used it and also talked to Pat, the owner of X-Ram, who is located about 45 minutes from me. He told me if I wasn't happy with the results he'd buy it back. So with the X-Ram intake and 1.6-1 roller rockers I should see low 14's. If that doesn't work I'll convert to Edelbrock Air-Gap and Holley carb(yes I know-it's considered a backwards move). In a couple years I'll probably go with a crate motor and do a swap. Cubic dollars count and my bikes take a lot of that too! Besides, why ditch a perfectly good engine till I need to. I'm also gonna add a shift kit to the trans, the 2-3 vshift probably cost 1-2 tenths in itself.
