View Full Version : Speed ohmeter cable SCHOON 08-28-2009, 07:02 AM Speed ohmeter cable crapped out on me last night. What's involved to replace on a 74. Thanks, Schoon blueshark 08-28-2009, 07:05 PM Don't know the answer outright but imagine it will be a PITA. I'll see if my BIL still has his '74 assembly manual. if so I'll post the relivant pages. Cheers MikeC3 08-28-2009, 08:04 PM Check the gear in the tranny first!!! It's just plastic and is usually the cause. My 73's odometers stopped rolling but the speedometer still works (thank goodness). Pulling the speedometer is one thing I've been postponing since it's supposed to be a real PITA. If you have really itty-bitty hands it may be a little easier. Be sure to check the gear in the transmission first though since that's the likely reason for it to stop working and it's soooo much easier to repair than the gauge. 73shark 08-28-2009, 11:26 PM If it is the cable, it has to be removed from the housing on the speedo end. It's not easy but can be done w/o removing the dash or cluster. But I do have small hands and after doing this, they look like I'd wrestled a bobcat. 1974corvetteowner 08-30-2009, 11:16 PM I have just replaced my Speedo tranny cable, gear and the "housing" to the gear in my 74 and it was a real PITA. To get at the back of the speedo i dropped the steering column and unscrewed the dash but left it in place so that i could get my hands in. One thing to look at when you pull the tranny gear out for the speedo checking the "Housing" the gear sits in and the cable screws into because mine was really out of round causing the gear to get hung up MikeC3 09-23-2009, 02:49 PM How did the repair go? Any tips? I have to replace my odometer on my 73. SCHOON 09-23-2009, 06:12 PM Real busy last couple of weeks, no time to mess with the Vet. Maybe next week, stay tuned. I can't even get my hands on it. Doid you drop the exhaust on that side? Schoon SCHOON 04-07-2010, 03:57 PM I finally changed out my speedo cable and drive gear in my 74 If you would like to know how it's done and save yourself some headaches. Please ask. Schoon 73shark 04-07-2010, 04:21 PM Bet you have some serious fun w/ that. ;) SCHOON 04-08-2010, 05:09 PM The next time will be a lot easier. blueshark 04-09-2010, 08:59 PM I have to do it on my '73....please share. LOL SCHOON 04-11-2010, 07:33 PM Ok Blue Shark, Open hood and trace speedo cable through firewall Pull grommet out of fire wall (easy does it) Have someone hold on to speedo cable by grommet Slide you hand up behind dash (be careful not to mess up wires or vac hoses) You show be able to feel the speedo cable where it attaches to the back of the speed ohmeter The cable plugs into the back of the speed ohmeter and can be removed by pulling down on a small clip on the bottom of the connection. When you have pulled down on the clip have the person holding on the cable under the hood pull on the cable until it comes off the speed ohmeter. If it doesn't come off then you are not pulling down on the clip all the way or the person is not pulling hard enough. Once the cable is free pull it from under the hood so you have some slack in it for the next step. If you don't have a lift like me you need to put your Vet on stands. You should be able to unscrew the cable fron the transmission drive gear assembly. No big deal just follow the cable to the end. I could not get mine off so I had to drop the drve gear assembly. This is done by unscrerwing it from the out side of the trans. There is only one screw and a retainer clip. (now big deal just hard to get at) If you drop the drive gear assembly you might want to look at the gear and see if it is ok A lot of times the plastic gear is shot and the cable is fine. So you could check this first before buying a cable etc. The gears go by color, mine was brown 18 teeth = 3:36 gears. $14.99 Ecklers The gear comes out and goes back pretty easy. Make sure you you grease both ends of the new cable with good grease before installing When installing the new cable to the speed ohmeter this time don't pulll down on the clip just push straight in you will know when it is connected. You need to do this part by yourself with one hand(sucks because you can't see anything and the shape of the cable has to fit the shape of the speed ohmeter). Make sure when you are done to check and see if the cable is in the clips on the firewall and underneath of you car. If not, the cable will melt on the exhaust. Hope this helps. Schoon |
