Speed ohmeter cable
#13
Ok Blue Shark,
Open hood and trace speedo cable through firewall
Pull grommet out of fire wall (easy does it)
Have someone hold on to speedo cable by grommet
Slide you hand up behind dash (be careful not to mess up wires or vac hoses)
You show be able to feel the speedo cable where it attaches to the back of the speed ohmeter
The cable plugs into the back of the speed ohmeter and can be removed by pulling down on a small clip on the bottom of the connection.
When you have pulled down on the clip have the person holding on the cable under the hood pull on the cable until it comes off the speed ohmeter.
If it doesn't come off then you are not pulling down on the clip all the way or the person is not pulling hard enough.
Once the cable is free pull it from under the hood so you have some slack in it for the next step.
If you don't have a lift like me you need to put your Vet on stands.
You should be able to unscrew the cable fron the transmission drive gear assembly.
No big deal just follow the cable to the end.
I could not get mine off so I had to drop the drve gear assembly.
This is done by unscrerwing it from the out side of the trans.
There is only one screw and a retainer clip. (now big deal just hard to get at)
If you drop the drive gear assembly you might want to look at the gear and see if it is ok
A lot of times the plastic gear is shot and the cable is fine.
So you could check this first before buying a cable etc.
The gears go by color, mine was brown 18 teeth = 3:36 gears. $14.99 Ecklers
The gear comes out and goes back pretty easy.
Make sure you you grease both ends of the new cable with good grease before installing
When installing the new cable to the speed ohmeter this time don't pulll down on the clip just push straight in you will know when it is connected. You need to do this part by yourself with one hand(sucks because you can't see anything and the shape of the cable has to fit the shape of the speed ohmeter).
Make sure when you are done to check and see if the cable is in the clips on the firewall and underneath of you car. If not, the cable will melt on the exhaust.
Hope this helps.
