My Corvette black book lists suffixes starting with "H" as being 327's and suffixes starting with "I"as being 427's. The suffixes are 2 letters.

Gosh Johnny,I dunno. I just looked up 66's in my black book and that's what it said. I looked up "suffix" in the glossary: "two or three character alpha code etched in an engine block which identifies usage. Also called the broadcast code."
There were 27,720 of 'em from 194376S1000001-194376S127720.For convertibles 4th digit is a 6.
Ending vehicle sept 65-102031,Oct 65-104384,Nov 65-107186,Dec 65-109892,JAn 66-112587,Feb 66-115283,Mar 66-118091,Apr 66-120664,May 66-123016,Jun 66-125469 & Jul 66-127720.
At least you can tell what month it was built in.
But I guess the answer to your question is: No,you can't tell what engine it had from the serial number until you find more info than I have!
If you have the hood, big block cars "received the special bubble hoods first seen on the 65's with the 396 engine"
