1970 VIN

RE: 1970 VIN
You can not tell from the vin on a 1970 and I believe it holds true for a 72 any important information. These vins were not coded so the only thing you can determine from them is the vin # sequence.
There is a plate on the driver's side door that will give you the build date A29=Dec 29,1969 for a 70 because production began in Dec due to a strike by the UAW. The plate will also give you the interior and exterior color codes. The engine pad will give you the engine type and transmission type and will have the last 6 digits of the vin# on it.
All of these items can be easily counterfeited and are for high ticket cars like Big Blocks and LT1's. There are many more Big Blocks out there today than the General ever built. Be careful and buy a car because you like it and want to drive it. If you buy it as an investment you had better know what you are doing because when you want to sell your investment the next guy will know what is and what is not a fake.
