Default 1969 ZL1 located???????????

Hey all just wondering if there is any truth that there is a 3rd 69 ZL1 still out there. The car that I came across says 427 then ZL1 on the bottom of the tan console. The car has been painted with dime size metal flake green and motor and trans are gone. The current owner says he never picked up the motor and trans when he bought the car quite a few years ago, but thought the previous owner said it was an aluminum block and heads. Is there any other reason for the console to say ZL1 and 427 without the HP rating? Just wondering if is worth persuing or not?

Just wondering if there is anything else on the car that would give any indication of this really being a ZL1?

i am no expert but after doing a little research there are only 2 69 ZL1 vettes produced...the only way i know of to tell if it is a true ZL1 would be to find the original window sticker or a build sheet for the car such as a tank sticker

As you probably know, the ZL-1 was an all aluminum version of the L-88 but had higher domed pistons which boosted CR to 12.5:1. So it should have the airbox hood and radio/heater delete. There was a label on the console that said to use 103 octane gas. Not much help for you but it had M22 "rock crusher" tranny. So named for its noisy, straight cut gears.

Mike Yager spoke of a rumored "third" ZL-1 in his 2007 book that was undergoing authentication. That means your find would be a "fourth" ZL-1. Be very careful in pursuing this car if he is asking true ZL-1 prices which would be high six to low seven figures if it still had the original engine.

BTW welcome to the Corvette Forum.

Edit: Probably hard to verify now but the two factory ZL-1s had a unique paint strip that went across the nose just behind the bumper and then turned and went back along the top of the fenders tapering to a point near the windshield. There are records of 94 ZL-1 engines being built for Corvettes and shipped out separate. So it might be that someone made a clone. What's the VIN?

Thanks for the welcome shark... The car is missing the complete front clip no interior and I havent looked at the vin yet but my only indication that I have is what the guy said andwhat I saw on theconsole........Is there any other reason for the console tag to say 427 and ZL1with no hp or torque spec, is this what a true zl1 had? I dont know.....I can get some pics of the car and console. If anyone has a pic of the console in one of the true cars that would help at least for the console not the car for now.

I've seen a pic of a L-88 console and remember the 103 octane sticker. Can't remember if it had the engine info plate or not. Will look thru my ref books and see what I can find.
