1974 C3 Need help identifying wires under the hood, please!
I have often wondered about that wire also and could not find a place for it. So I got the Haynes manual out and looked it up. Acording to the manual the black and white wire goes to the windshield washer fluid tank to tell you your washer fluid is low. it must have been a option, I replaced the original on the 77 (I think it looked original) and it did not have a sensor on the tank. You might be able to install a sensor if they are available, I haven't looked, or even one was installed what warning light would light up? Something to play with I guess. As far as the two holes on the inner fender the 77 model has a vacuum servo for the cruise control mounted there, two holes with rivets attaching it. Thats all I have I hope that helps.
It's in the late '60s that all the American manufacturers began developing the basic/expandable wiring harnesses to reduce the time and expense of inventory. If you dig deep enough you'll probably find a lot of unused plugs if it is a lower option car. It only gets worse as cars get newer. But it can make it easier to add options after the fact.
As always guys, thanks so much for your input! Regarding the extra plugs for low optioned cars....mine has PS/PB/PW, TT wheel, and AC so I don't know what options could be missing....even the alarm is still completely functional so it's not a wire that is supposed to go to that! The things that don't work, drivers window..(.pretty sure it's the regulator) and AC, (pretty sure it needs a recharge) don't look like these mystery wires have anything to do with them. But who knows? The car is a 1/2 century old with countless hands under the hood in all those years, so who knows what those hands did! (Or UN-did!) I'm still vacillating between keeping the car and finding an earlier chrome bumper 4 speed to replace it, (unlike you lucky SOB's I can't have more than one.....not so much the money as the lack of space and time.....so for now I am going to keep on tracking down the little gremlins while waiting my turn at the body shop for the bumper covers. I do love the color combo though and the car does run really nice, so there's a real good chance that once I get the bumpers done and painted I won't want to let this one go after all! And meantime I'm having fun! So thank you yet again for the constant good advice!
Once you start digging into the car you will find it addictive and you will make time for it. I did. There are times when it can be frustrating and you will need to walk away for awhile, that's normal. I find it rewarding I can keep the old beater running.
