Default 73 speedometer problem

Is there a simple fix for the speedometer I can do myself, the odometer stopped working all together & the speedo needle jumps around with a loud clicking from the speedo head, I dont think this is a cable problem?

If the cable isn't broken it's a easy job to change it just disconnect it at the transmission and grease and installa new one. Ifthe one you have nowbreaks then you have to get to the speedometer end, which is much herder to do. PG

usually when the speedo cable is wore it acts like as spring and winds up and lets go causing the speedo needle to bounce.Like pg says it is easy to change now before it breaks.Undo it at the trans. and pull out the core, grease up the new one and slide it back in.You will have to spin the core slowly at the end to line it up with the speedo head. Its real easy, have fun ,talk at ya later. Oh ya let us know how you make out.

Sorry Cadman but I gave you bad information. I changed my speedo & tach cables 11-02-00. Today I checked the Haynes Manual and then I remembered that they have to be replaced from behind the guages, that makes it a little more difficult but basic hand tools and patience is all you'll need.
Have some new bulbs handy, might as well do them while your in there. PG.

Small hands, skinny arms, and the ability to withstand pain help. The hardest part is getting the cable housing separated from the speedo head. You have to push the clip together and pull the housing forward. You can use a long screwdriver to push the clip while you use the one hand that will fit to remove the housing. Good luck.
