Schoon, Not just a great idea installing that air cleaner, but a great bit of info for all of us, as 89 bucks is pretty reasonable. I'm very much less concerned about the sound than I am the performance boost, and also knowing that K&N has been a great name in the automotive industry for a very long time. Thanks so much f/ the info, I'll be installing one this winter. Again, f/ 89 bucks is a real bargain.

Hey Jim,
There is anoticable performance boost with this type filter and the sound aint bad either.
I would say 10-15hp from adding the filter.
Also noticed better throttle response.

A few weeks back I added an HEI distributor that I purchased on Ebay brand new for $117
What a difference that made over the stock points setup.

How about hood clearance, what do ya figure ya have left?
Is the new filter set up, the same thickness as stock?

I would say it's about 1/4" - 1/2" higher in the center.
If I shine a flash light from inside the car it looks like I have plenty of clearance left.
I know a lot of guys who installed them and never had a clearance problem.

Easy way to check hood clearance is to use some modeling clay and set it on the highest point and then measure it after closing and opening the hood.

And dump the threaded stud/wingnut combo. I had enough room under my raised hood to use a Phillips panhead screw. Every inch... or 1/4' helps!

WHAT DOES A PHILIPS HEAD PAN SCREW LOOK LIKE?
HOW DOES IT ATTACH TO THE THREADED ROD?

It normally is a 1/4-20 threaded rod. Remove the rod from the carb body... and use a standard pan head phillips drive machine screw. Length depends on how tall your filter is, and whether you use a drop base cleaner or not. I used this on mine and it is flush with the top of the Flow top. Dont forget the lock washer...

Thanks for the info.
This looks like the way to go, the wing nuts always work themselves loose.

I have used these on different applications but the name through me.
