RE: big 79 vibrations
Next time you take it ut and it starts to vibrate put it in neutral.
If it still vibrates it's probablyone of your wheels or front end.
Ifit still vibrates in neutral could be like the other guys said balancer or maybe your drive shaft.
Wouldn't hurt to get the shaft it rebalanced after all these years.
I had a vibrationwhen I hit50 miles per/hr, was the drive shaft.

RE: big 79 vibrations
I took it for a test drive today and everything worked out good. The vibration is gone. Took it up to about 4500 RPM in second and drive and everything went well. Next item to repair is the speedometer cable. I need to do it so I can tell how fast I am going but i can not get my hand up there to take it off the transmission. This will be a new post I guess.
Thanks for all the help.

If you used the bolt to pull it on and didn't put the threads out of the snout of the crank, then you really lucked out. The installer tool screws all of the way in and then the nut on it applies pressure to the balancer. That way you get full use of all of the threads in the crank. Did you remember to torque the mounting bolt?
Yes, the speedo cable is a PITA to get to on both ends. Do you know if the cable is bad, tranny plastic gear is bad, or speedo head is bad?
Glad you solved the bad vibes problem.
BTW if you haven't changed the fuel pump yet, a way to keep the pushrod from sliding out when you are putting the pump back on is to put a gob of grease on the end before you insert back into the block. This will keep it stuck to the cam lobe.
